I had a 15m edge and thought it was a dog...light wind specific is the way to go...

What year was that?
I’ve gone from a 17 strutless to a 15m V8 edge. The edge is way better. It’s easy to fly, launch and relaunch. I’ve maybe lost 1 or 2 mph from the low end but it flies upwind and has a much better top end. I’ve been comfortable on it in 20mph gusts, where as I was overpowered on the 17 past 14mph.
But once the wind picks up it is really quick, and you soon start to motor.
I’ve been out with a big twin tip when people on Zephyrs couldn’t stay upwind.
Personally, I think a wide board is more of a savour than a big kite. It doesn’t need to be long. Mine is only 137 long but it’s 49cm wide, and that makes all the difference.

Why only limit yourself to Zephyr or Edge? There are other very interesting options in these sizes:
-Cab Contra
-OR Flite
-Fat Lady

I owned 2nd gen FL a while back, nowadays I'm last year's Flite when it's too light and it's a really fun kite to fly. Really fast-turning for a 17m - on pars with some 12-s.

Albeit I'm not a big fan of large kites, these 17-s are sweet for practicing FS moves as everything is smooth and controllable.

Actually in light wind some increase in board area, either width or length will help, but more important for riding in light wind is the board's rocker, or amount of curvature tip-to-tip.

Flat boards or ones with almost no rocker have less hydrodynamic drag than a board with the same outline but loads of rocker. For a given amount of pull from the kite, the flat board will move faster, and the faster the rider moves, the more apparent wind the kite feels so it will generate more power, which will mean better performance ( upwind ability, jumping ).

Of course there is a downside to a flat board, they generally to not turn as sweetly as a board with some rocker.

One big advantage of having a 2nd flat light-wind board, if/when the wind picks up ( or drops off ), it's a lot easier & faster to switch boards compared to setting up another kite.

I personally prefer the edge. Zep is batshit boring for me. But it was a few years ago now that i flew one. Maybe they are more fun now.
