I love riding without a leash when the right opportunities arise.
What additional freedoms does this offer? Genuinely puzzled how no leash enriches the experience? Especially given how unobtrusive modern set ups are.

I do something similar when hydrofoiling, most of the time, no leash cluttering the lines/depower line, a lot cleaner and more options.

But still got a QR/wichard, and usually connect my harness leash to the loop or depowerline after launch, to avoid an accidental release.

Again, superlightly powered and no crowded beaches.

When on waveboards thus a lot more power, always using a leash/flagout :thumb:

Still no answers...

Riding without flagout is very selfish, you need to consider the risk of hitting bystanders with a loose flying kite. Getting caught in the lines and repowering the kite has the potential to kill someone.

Only situation to ride without a flagout is in big surf where you want to detach as quick as possible when you crash inside the washing machine and completely disconnecting from your kite as soon as possible can be beneficial. But please reconnect your leash when launching/landing and outside breaking zone.

Had to pull the QR once... on someone else! That guy was getting dragged, head full of sand, out of control. Not sure how it happened in the first place, but it did. Few of us jumped on him and tried to release him from his ordeal. If it had not been a standardized QR, we would have struggled to hold onto that guy for any longer, and he would have ran out of beach to be dragged onto.
Shit does happen.

Good Reply !! :thumb:
There ARE times , when a leash isn't really needed .

I bin taken out by 3 run-away kites , without a rider attached, since 2003.
One of them was a broken leash , (so not directly the riders fault) ; but
the other two, were because the rider didn't even have a leash !!! :angryfire:

Now i actually check , on water or land , if a rider has a leash ; if
they don't, (then i try to never go down-wind of him/her).

BTW :
If you ride unhooked ; you need a stronger leash than normal. One
reason is that your kite may be more powered, when you let go ; than
a guy that rides hooked-in, and pulls the QR.

There's another situation - foiling with a 3-5m kite and having enough bar throw to kill most of kite power. You attach the leash above the $chickenloop (whatever serves its purpose) just as a precaution if you unhook by mistake.
For my 45cm bar I don't have a flag line.

No, better option is to fix the unwanted unhooking.

Unless you want to ride unhooked from time to time the hook + chickenloop combination is an obsolete remnant from the past.
A slider rope or small loop of rope the size of the hook, if you want a more fixed connection, are much better. Just open and close your chickenloop around the rope, added bonus is that you practice muscle memory and test your quick release every session.

That's exactly what I ride - rope chickenloop. But I don't have a flagout line on a small bar, I hook the leash above the $chickenloop

What Im trying to say is that its ok to use whatever only when respecting the choices of others.
Discussion is one thing and imposing views on other is another.
Calling a stupid idea stupid isn't imposing anything on anyone, nor is it really disrespectful, it's just a factual way to evaluate a set of choices.

Riding a motorbike without a helmet is stupid, period. For almost no additional investment you can reduce the risk of fatal injury during an accident by a wide margin, whether it's culturally fashionable or not.

Failing to take an available precaution that has the ability to save your life is literally the definition of being stupid:

stupid adjective
stu·pid | \ ˈstü-pəd , ˈstyü-\
Definition of stupid (Entry 1 of 2)
1a : slow of mind : OBTUSE
b : given to unintelligent decisions or acts : acting in an unintelligent or careless manner
c : lacking intelligence or reason : BRUTISH
2 : dulled in feeling or sensation : TORPID
still stupid from the sedative
3 : marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting : SENSELESS
a stupid decision
