Aruba: Last Minute Travel

Postby Sun » Sat Aug 03, 2019 1:46 am

I got the opportunity to go to Aruba for the next five days, found out today. I have never been. I am eyeballing a place to stay near Boca Grandi. What kite sizes should I take? I am 90kg and love to ride powered. For reference, two weeks in Cumbuco in September I rode my 12m mostly, 9m on downwinders past Taiba to Paracuru. I typically ride 8m to 10m in Cape Town during January. TT rider, boost addict.

I have a 12-10-8 Dice quiver. Can probably only take 2 kites.

I am thinking 12m and 10m Dice. 12m typically tops out at 25 mph / 22 knots, and I do not usually use the 8m until wind stays above about 32 mph / 28 knots. 10m is my sweet size.

Hard call: "The constant trade wind blows most of the days between 20 and 25 knots. Some days are lighter and range from 15 – 20 knots and some days the wind can pick up to 30 - 35 knots. The most used kite sizes are 7m to 12m."

I'd go for 10 and 12...but can't you try and fit the 8?
Have fun!

When I went there in January I only needed a 7 & 9m. I used the 7m almost everyday. I weigh over 200lbs, constantly windy place.

Kited Boca Grandi for a week this past May using a 6, 8, and 11m and stayed at Kite Inn close to the jail, 5 minutes from Boca. Kite Inn is convenient 2 star accommodation and the owner Arnold is a foil kiter extraordinaire who knows everything and everybody around the island.

Yeah, I went in early July, and I needed a 12 (I'm 170 lbs for reference) 2 of the 4 days I kited. The other 2 were solid 7-9m range, but the first day and the last day not so much. Of course, the last day it did pick up.

Couple words of advice, stay in the bay at Boca Grandi, I went north on the reef because I was on a surfboard and it was so shallow that I lost 2 fins getting back in, better than losing skin, but still. It's also straight onshore, so a little extra power isn't bad to have.

The forecasts there are on target so you can also make a last minute packing decision. https://wx.ikitesurf.com/map#11.803,-72.914,6,1,!1296,2

10m and 12m will work for this week's forecast. http://www.kite-inn.com .
$80/night with cold a/c and hot shower. Clean and comfortable. Likey there's other kiters staying there.
Rent a car and Arnold will likely meet you at the airport so you can follow him.
