Leaving bar attached to foil kites: why do lines twist?

I leave a bar attached in all my foil kites. Works well most of the time but every now and then the inside and outs lines on one side end up twisted around each other and I have to detach a line to untwist. How to prevent? Thanks

If you have a kite bag with an outside pocket (like the old FS Speed bags), you can usually keep things straight by putting the kite in the bag with the still-attached bar in the outside pocket.

It happens to me too. Don't know the solution yet. Keeping the bar inside or outside the bag didn't make any difference. Somehow the inner lines get twisted while winding the lines.

I keep it outside bag to rinse lines. It’s like a damn magic trick. Shouldn’t be able to happen if you never detach the lines, but it does.

It's how you are strait I guess the raps on the bar.
This use to happen to me occasionally as well before I changed how I begin the process of rapping my lines up. I use to start the raps with not much consistency .
But now I start by:
1 pull chicken loop to be tight next to the bar
2. Fold the two floats toward the bar and hold them with the bar.
3. Take all lines and figure 8 them around the center of the bar tightly until you get you only the lines. So basically you are wrapping the depower lines and sheeting system around the bar.
4. Once you get to the lines only, then start winding normally.

Not sure if that makes sence but since it started that, I never have your problem again

My thoughts are that the safety of running out and attaching lines each session is a good thing.

Found this,
It show exactly what I was trying to describe.
Seriously, it won't happen anymore if you do this

I do the same on all my tubes and never have a problem.

If you have four lines attached to a bar at both ends, I also call kite as bar because lines are un non-changeable order it is impossible to do twist requiring detaching the lines. Only thing possible is if kite inverts then both side steering- and front-lines are inverted what you fix by taking bar through front-lines.

If only one side is twisting you probably unwind lines that one line goes beneath the bar on other at top. I cannot imagine other reason.

What I do. I unwind lines but then start doing straightening lines top down. I open and untwist mixer and bridle so that steering lines & Z or BR are down. Then I place them in order, steering line out and frontline in. Then move towards bar combing. This way when bridle is ok you know how lines should be. When I get close to bar I rotate out 4 line twists at the time. Then I do other side similar, so that bridle is ok. I prefil the kite at the same go. You are ready.

If you still experience one steering line going around both front-lines left and right then fix by fishpoling bar around. But for example green steering line twisted around green front-line when red side is ok is impossible situation -> do the bridle open first.

Hi,
I keep the bar connected to my tubes as well for years and had this problem but not anymore.

To me the reason is not really how you wrap the bar (otherwise this would not lead to always get the same tangling of "rear line inside front line" half turn) but rather how you roll and unroll the kite. Indeed without air structure, wind, ect, if your lines make a big slack free space between left lines and right lines, all floating in the wind, one group of line can turn around the kite.

So, my tip is to leave the bar very far away from the kite when you roll/unroll, with a lot of floating slack line DOWNWIND the kite ; that way the wind prevent both left and right lines to turn around the kite. Better is all the bar downwind the kite. If you prefer or have to put the bar elsewhere, make a big "J" shape with slack lines to get at least 2 meters lines downwind the kite.
When kite is properly rolled and put in the bag, you can roll your lines up to the bag.
Then be carreful to avoid pushing the bar "through" the remaining slack lines in the bag. Outside is the safest for that reason (and also allow the bar to try more rapidly and without getting the kite wet.

Last but maybe not least: i roll the kite like a foilkite since 7 years now, i.e first fold in two, then i roll from tips up to central stut. To ne this is more efficient (less turns and pushes the air to the outside without un-ronling the 1st-roll tip). I think this also help.not tangling the lines since all lines become clother to each other ( almost in one 4 line bundle group), therefore the kite cannot go in-between during the roll operation.

My 2 cents...
