Bridle Mod Old Slingshot Octane?

Postby revhed » Tue Sep 17, 2019 7:55 am

Was just given OLD, like more than 11 years, 13m2 Sling Shot Octane.
Replaced one pump as ALL valves leaked, perfect now!
This kite has pulley at kite L E in between steering pig tail and power line.
Kite just flies poor!
I fully understand that said pulley provides 50% throw at L E but wonder if new modded bridle having
only one direct steering connection in same place as current but power bridle configured different?
Any one done this or has ideas?
If someone has ideas or needs photo can be provided with pleasure.
I would like to do all possible to see if I can get this to fly well then test with all but center STRUT deflated to see if worth time to cut other 4
for weight saving.
Any and all thoughts Ideas welcome!

Hi,
Usually what happens is pulleylines that go through a pulley, shrink with time.
I would guess that the pulleyline has shrunk about 10 cm. You could email slingshot to ask for the bridle lengths for that kite.
You can add a pigtail on the leading edge side to extend the pulleyline. Usually, I flip (le to te) the pulleyline, to even out the wear on the pulleyline to extend the pulleylines life.
To tune the pulleyline, start off the with pulleyline too long. Make sure your flying lines are tuned. Kite should just start to backstall with bar pulled all the way in with the kite at the edge of the window. Gradually shorten the pigtail with test flights. Watch how the shoulders of the kite behave with power strokes. Once the pulleyline gets too short the bar pressure goes up and the flying performance goes down.
Looking at the stock bridle, I don't have any recommendations for improvement. I am doubtful that the kite will perform better with struts removed. Tuning that pulleyline will bring it back to stock performance.

Since you're speaking about pulleys, I have to assume it's the V2 version.

The bridled 2010 Octane V2 was introduced 10 years ago in late 2009. The Octane V1 was a bridle-less C-Kite that's definitely more than 11 years old.

I'm still sitting on a V2 Octane 11m still and like you I'd also be interested in updating/modding the bridle to refine it's flying characteristics, especially the drift.

Hopefully someone can chime in with some experience on this kite, but being 10 years old now, I'd doubt there's much that can be done.
