The true answer is front and back of the bar one bright the other dark then it is not left or right but right and wrong. This takes less time to process and would be safer.
This by far the best solution.
Though for visibility it is probably handy to add like a couple of light bands to the dark side of the bar.

Maybe better said top and bottom?
I disagree strongly!
Bar and float, and why not flag on leader after float, needs to be bright color (dayglo, floro yellow, hunter orange) on right side for right handers, and dark color on other.
Red and blue are simply not seen well enough.
As for grabbing the bar and hoping for the best...
