We're still loving the Fish in the office and I think it'll be a bit better as a lightwind/beginner board as well. I think the Whip will hold up a bit better as the waves pick up a bit but for where you are I'd go with the Fish. That said, before we added the Fish to the lineup I'd have suggested the Whip for what you're describing so I don't think you'd be disappointed in that board either.

If I'm looking to choose a size, what considerations do i take to make a decision? For example I'm 85kgs 185cms, board would not be primarily for light wind, I'm intermediate tt, but have no experience with directional boards, my spot is cross onshore with small waist high mushy swell, i was set to buy the pro fish 5'5, but a similar sized rider at beginning of thread picked a 5'2, so what impact does a higher volume board make?

I weight exactly the same 187lbs...I went with the 5'5 and have zero regrets..I have another board for high wind but honestly I may sell it because I have had the 5"5 PF out in 30knt wind on my 7m slash and was perfectly comfortable, the board never felt too big. In lighter wind it is fantastic fun, fast, planes early and slashes small to medium waves with ease...

Collected my 5'5" Pro Fish today. I'm 80kg/176lb and 5'5" is the right size for me to progress on. I might want a smaller board for strong winds in the future, but there's no point in starting with a 5'2" because (imo) at this stage that would slow down progression.
