Impact vest kitesurf wakeboard

Postby jocol » Wed Oct 30, 2019 11:19 am

I am looking to buy an impact vest for wakeboarding.
Can I also use it for kitesurf?
Or is it a different vest for each sport?

If you use a seat harness then you should be able to use a normal impact vest. I use a wakeboard Liquid Force impact vest with my seat harness.

With a waist harness I'm not sure, maybe someone else can comment on that.

Kiteboarding impact vests are NOT rated for CGA Type3 floatation. Wakeboarding vests required for use behind a boat are rated CGA Type3. Wakeboarding impact vests used for competition and cable parks are the exact same as a kiteboard impact vest and are NOT rated nor is it required.

The bigger determining factor is what type of kite harness you're using...
Kiteboarding impact vests that are designed to work with a waist harness will have limited impact protection for wakeboarding since half of the vest is void of impact foam and are designed to fit under the harness.
Impact vests for wakeboarding (and kiteboarding) are better suited for use with a seat or short type harness since they are full length and offer the most amount of protection.
A few brands also offer a CGA Type3 floatation vest that are modified to be waist harness compatible. These would also serve very well for use behind a wakeboard boat since they're CGA rated. :thumb:

Mystic and O'neill (both of which I've owned) are the exact same thing other than the lower/midsection is without padding to accommodate a waist harness.

I use a Mystic Star for kiting and boat sports. As mentioned, these are NOT Coast Guard Approved. These really don't provide much floatation, just designed for protecting your ribs/back. Never owned a CGA kite specific vest. If you are buying for floatation safety, look for a CGA model, there really is a difference.

If not, Mystic Majestic, Star and O'neill Gurus are super comfy. Guru is hard to get in the U.S. for some reason.

I recently bought a Liquid Force impact vest - one of these: ... llow-black

I was a little uncertain of how it would feel, but I have been impressed with how well it fits underneath a waist harness. Not only does it fit, the vest actually helps keep the harness from riding up. Having said that, there is minimal protection offered to the lower ribs.

For wake boarding i all ways wear a cga vest. After my last injury torn bicep from lifting weights but it tore when i was wake boarding. I was very glad to be in a vest with some actual flotation. When I get back to kiting I'll be in a cga vest. It is not worth it to not be. Had my bicep ruptured kiting in deep water i dont know how I would of made it back to shore.
