Most surfing injuries involve shoulder or knee, surgery usually not required

A new study characterizes MRI patterns of acute surfing-related injuries in patients seeking care at HSS. Researchers also report on the proportion of those injuries that required orthopedic surgical intervention. The study found that the most common injuries involved the knee or shoulder. Surgery was usually not necessary.

They don't mention the possibility of the injuries not being from other activities. I bet if they actually looked into it they would find their numbers lower. I say this because I have just had surgery on my left bicep. It ruptured and tore off of my forearm 2 and a half weeks ago while wake boarding. Last year in Aug I had the a pec tear while wake boarding. Both injuries while they might have happened while I was on the water they were not related to the sport. In my 20's I was a into heavy lifting and spent a lot of time in the gym. The pec tore with nothing in my hand all I was doing was reaching for the the handle after an indy grab.

I would say most recreational surfers are more active than the general population. Being what ever it is tennis, cycling, gym etc etc.

Selection bias?

These are surfers who live in NYC or who travel to NYC for care.

What would we find in CA or HI?

We're kitesurfers with both similar and different areas of injury, frequency and mechanisms.

2 tips, use a noseguard and sand your fins down with 200 grit. I have been stitched /glued up too many times.
