That was me some years back. Took the stress of losing a board out of the equation, more relaxed, faster progress.

I am still using GoJoe, not because of bodydrag, but if lost in waves board becomes invisible and I kite in river mouth with strong current straight into open sea. I never felt more kook when came out of water without board.

I think that's a good point. My job is full of risk and injuries. I've received stiches multiple times, been burned, concussed, broken bones, hydraulic injection injury , been attacked, fallen from height and the list goes on and on. I'm not some extreme tough guy lol, just the fruits of 35 years of work. To me I see very little danger in kitesurfing. Motocross and hockey were a totally different story, you geared up and still end up in the ER. Now foiling I made the mistake of no leg protection and ended up with 10 stiches on my shin So long suit now, I'm not a masochist !

Why don't people wear helmets? They don't weigh anything. You can't see or feel them. They save your noggin and ears. Seems like a win-win to me.

Do people look at me and judge me for wearing one? Do you lot care what people think about how cool you look? The only 'cool' sport in the ocean is surfing, the rest of us are just kooks

Here in Aus I'm more concerned about skin cancer, and have my own dorky hooded rash vest / bucket hat combo that works really well. I can see extra sun damage on my face from before I had this sorted, but haven't had any close calls with my head yet...

Having said that, I think I'll be getting a helmet soon for when I'm kiting near rocks or big boost sessions (I'm keen on the ear protection!). I'll figure something out to keep the sun off.

10 years ago in Europe no skier or snowboarder was using helmets, nowadays rarely you see someone without.

Helmets on the snow are a completely different thing from the water. Not because of the increased impact risk, but because they are better than any other headgear on the market for keeping you ventilated AND warm. Once you wear a snowboard/ski helmet, you most likely will realize that it is the only way to stay warm and dry on the snow.

On the water, the helmet does little with respect to keeping you warm or ventilated. Only thing it does there is kind of keep the sun off of your head.
