anybody down in La Ventana?

Postby tkachuk » Sat Nov 16, 2019 4:22 pm

Heading down to La Ventana tomorrow.
I've found the wind forecast sites are notoriously inaccurate for this spot.
Anybody currently kiting there that could give me an idea of kite sizes for next week?
I see Sunday's storm and lack of el Norte for the week but unsure of what that actually means.

Was good for a while but light last week
And supposed to be light again after the storm, 9-10m on foil

I’m doing a last minute trip next week for a week in Ventana. I’ll mostly be hydrofoiling, have a 6/10 quiver of Souls and a 3m Peak. Will I need to bring my 71cm short mast? Love to just pack my normal 91. Planning on flying into Cabo and driving up. Anything I should be aware of? Thanks

Forecasts for La Ventana are usually crap and actuals are usually amazing.
91cm mast is just fine unless you can bring even longer one.
Try to bring some pesos $100-$200 worth, hopefully smaller bills, not 1000s. Credit cards work in shops and gas stations. Bring reef shoes as low tide gets some nasty corral heads closer to surface. 2mm long sleeve shortie was perfect for me. 4/5/7/10 quiver is great for foiling. Mine on last trip was 5/7/9 and I ended up using 9 only once and needed smaller than 5 on several days. Didn’t even bother to assemble my brand new twintip.
Get a ride to Rasta beach or hot springs and do a downwinder to Baja Joes. On low tide visit hot springs, they’re cool. Make sure you mix sea water appropriately to not burn you ass.
If you need kite/board repair - ask at Baja Joes.
Thermal winds pick up hard after 11am and shut down abruptly after 4pm. Winds start earlier at north and end later south. You can possibly ride wind edge on a late downwinder but can miss it too.
Be cautious of reefs near shore coming in or coming close.
Watch out for occasional fishing nets.
Pharmacy on main road has all kind of medication you might need plus they often have actual doctor there too.
Be cautious about cows and dogs on the road when near/in town.
Use only drinking/bottled water for drinking/cooking and brushing teeth.

Somehow too many people wouldn’t lower/raise their kites when crossing paths, watch out for many beginners. Baja Joes area gets overcrowded, and there’s plenty of space north.

You might run into some pros there - the easiest to find is Adam Withington at Playa Central bar. Fred Hope is there occasionally and Reed Brady will be there too.

Bring small kites, tiny boards and medium-large sized wings - waves are fun

Looks great to me? What about tips on cost of living if you don't mind my asking? I've heard power bills are around $2-3 U.S.? Phone cards for the month are $20? Other utilities are one quarter of what they are in the states?
