what type of control bar is this?

Postby rafaelbucc » Sun Dec 01, 2019 7:25 pm

Newbie here, trying to piece together some gear.

Bought this control bar on eBay and it just arrived.

I know the brand is Slingshot, but aside from that there was no description.

What kind of control bar is this? Is it usable?

Similar to Cabrinha 2:1 bar. Has double the bar pressure, but you can lower it by converting it to standard setup -- follow instructions from Cabrinha manual.

Any 4 line bar can be used on any LEI kite. For bar that old your first concern should be how reliable the single line flag safety system is. If in doubt, don't thread the flag line through the center hole -- this would not allow freely spinning the bar, but that matters less when learning compared to safety.

that's a pulley 2:1 control bar they were not meant to be leashed just have to full release the kite if you get into trouble. You can't use it as is but you can part it up and build a new bar. You need to buy a Swivel/connector thing that replaces the stainless steel rings, remove the pulleys at the ends of the bar replace them with leaders, and possibly also replace the quick release, depending on what kind it is. I think those were lock'n'load which were reliable but I wouldn't use them because they are pull instead of push so your instincts for the control bar will be wrong. If you are into it yeah parting it up to build a new control bar is worth it because you get to build a whole new bar exactly how you like but you aren't really saving much money over just buying last year's control bar for a couple hundred. You can NOT use a 2:1 on modern kites. Won't fly right. It only works if the kite turns super slow, with extreme low bar pressure. If you use it on a modern kite the bar pressure will be far too high and the kite uncontrollable. The Naish and Cabrinha 2:1 bars were meant to be convertible to 1:1 and possibly could be flown with a modern kite if you don't need flagging, but not this one tho you can tell because it's missing the proper connectors. If you have never built a control bar from scratch and are into spending time learning how to do and buying a few hundred dollars of new parts, then part it up and make a new control bar. If you just want to fly the kite you need a new control bar, and sell this one on ebay for $25. I have built a half dozen control bars out of stuff like in the photo, it's fun but kind of expensive because of how many new parts you have to buy to turn these old 2:1 bars into a modern control bar.

No. 2:1 bars could be used on 2001-2004 Peter Lynn ARC kites or 2008 Cabrinha Contra and similar antiques which are not even safe to ride anymore

You can reuse bar itself and the lines and if you invest into KISS depower and redo leader lines you can convert it into a nice foiling bar but just don’t bother yet.

There are great bars you can buy for under $200

Thanks, returning this one.

Any recs for bars under $200? Been looking around I see almost all in the 3-500 range.

Yeah usually you want to look at a 2017 or 2018 control bar I would usually shop for an old Naish but I don't see that on the market right now. Naish used to always make too many control bars and you could find them for cheap at the end of the year but not this year. There seem to be a few Liquid force Mission v2 control bars for between $250 and $300. You can usually get a bargain if you can find last year's control bar brand new, but it depends on which brand they made too many of. $250 to $300 seems like a great price, maybe there's some other brands that have extra old stock they are trying to sell. Brand new control bar is between $500-$800 so getting one for $250 to $300 is great. I'm not sure there are control bars under $200 right now. Even $300 to $500 is not bad for a brand new control bar. I usually don't bother with used control bars because you end up having to replace the lines and maybe other stuff so it's usually not a great bargain.

Nice find. I wouldn't get the fireball because it has its all stupid system. Brand new 2016 cabrinha bar is fine, except I can't remember if that year was one of the "Chinese Puzzle" control bars that are impossible to reassemble in the water or not. I demo-ed a cabrinha 2020 trimlite this year and liked it a lot.
