Why do you need an ankle strap? Ive even cut it off on some boots. Maybe because I have a low instep but never felt that it does anything

Are we talking bout the same merl? Not sure...

The (high) ankle strap prevents water flushing in when you crash, and it prevent the boot from rolling "up" inside out also - this is an ankle strap:

Whereas the instep/dorsum strap is something I hate when using straps and dont want, can not see its purpose really - like this:

I might not know the correct names for these straps, sorry

I've been a happy Atan user for a few years but this year I have moved to Solite 3mm. The heat moulding tech works very well and I haven't yet had to use the booster socks (riding in the UK) so I'll never need to go thicker than 3mm.

solite looks realy good! but what about out sole durability? is it strong enough compared to regular, lets say ion or mystic top end boots?
Currently the soles are wearing well and we have some rocky bits on the beach. Can't compare them to Mystic but the soles seem more durable than my old Atan's.

Do they have a integrated split toe? Looks nice, though a bit pricey.

I'm happy with my Ions, and they're pretty durable for 3-4 seasons already. My Atans started to smell and the sole wore out after 3 seasons.
Yes, split toe inside.

The ankle seal on my Solite's is much tighter than my Atan's. I get very little flush (if at all) with the Solite boots without a strap. I tend to have my wetsuit leg over the boot rather than the boot pulled up over the leg (I know people have a different preference).

Disclaimer we sell Mystic

BUT....Mystic have an all new range of neoprene accessories out this season, the new Supreme are simply the warmest most comfy pair of boots I have used. They ave the Flaremesh quick drying fleecy lining.

The Mystic is also in a 3 mm version, great if the sole is thinner also :thumb:

Well, for sure there's a need for the straps; e.g. when landing really hot strapless the boot might roll on your foot, which you really don't want.

Oh, that's why, have always wondered...

Strapless hydrofoils don't have that stress, and all boards with straps would rather be without this strap, but I can see the use in your example.

Assume it is the same reason some like splittoe, to avoid it rolls on your foot.

Split toe is colder though, so I prefer normal boots when 3 mm, as I don't have the issue that it rolls, but understand the desire now.

I’ve used Atans for many years. Loved them! They were never very durable but the way they felt was worth the price when I wore through them. Grabbed a pair of the Kevlar sole booties right when they came out. On first or second sesh the front of the boot split right down the seam. Waited OVER A YEAR for a promised warranty replacement. Contacted the US dealer and the company directly on multiple occasions. Never received the promised replacement. This company doesn’t stand by their product or word.
