Time for new winter boots. Atan again?

Postby merl » Fri Jan 03, 2020 6:22 pm

Anyone out there used Atan hot mistral boots and found something even better?

Image

I've found them great for the last 5 winters or so, so I could happily buy them again, but maybe I am missing something even better. I don't need masses of extra straps or reinforcements. The only feature of interest that I have seen on some recent boots is a heel strap to make putting them on easier. I'd love something to make removing them easier but I guess that would probably compromise the warmth. What's out there? Note that I am in Sweden :snow: happy to see responses from people in the south of france but unlikely to take them seriously :)

I've been a happy Atan user for a few years but this year I have moved to Solite 3mm. The heat moulding tech works very well and I haven't yet had to use the booster socks (riding in the UK) so I'll never need to go thicker than 3mm.

Yes, I think so.

I have Atan Mistral 3mm boots which are a bit too cold in winter. But I recently bought some Solite 1mm Neoprene (not "knitted") socks which I wear inside the 3mm Atan booties. Just right and still plenty of feel, and much easier to get in and out of straps than the Hot Mistral 6.5mm booties*. :thumb:

* Have a pair of 6.5mm Atan Hot Mistral booties but they are difficult to get out of straps in a hurry.

I use the very same 3 mm Mistral here in Denmark all winther, used the Miboot from Atan, the first years.
Both are sufficiently warm here in Denmark where water is not below zero, and still great barefoot feel.

Thicker and it feels wrong to me.

Just ordered the split toe boot also, to try how this works.

Only reason I haven't tried that earlier was because the Mistral can be used with a drysuit with socks, when really winther, or with a wetsuit, whatever you choose.

In winther wetsuit now so either boot can work :thumb:
If colder and a drysuit the splittoe can not be used...

But also interested in hearing about alternatives.

It has to be 3 max 4 mm and straps around the instep/dorsum is a no no as useless for footstraps.

I always found Atan boot soles wear out really quickly if you regularly kite on a big beach where there is a bit of a walk to / from the water. I hate being cold so my winter boots are 7mm!

solite looks realy good! but what about out sole durability? is it strong enough compared to regular, lets say ion or mystic top end boots?

I like using neoprene socks under thick (6 mm) boots.
Socks also prevent boots to stink - socks are easier to wash. And it's easier to put on tight boots because socks slide better than your bare foot.

Do they have a integrated split toe? Looks nice, though a bit pricey.

I'm happy with my Ions, and they're pretty durable for 3-4 seasons already. My Atans started to smell and the sole wore out after 3 seasons.

It seems to lack velcro around the ankle...

And the Pro model got velcro at the wrong spot, only for surfers, not for footstraps...

But one could sew velcro at the shaft oneself maybe, on the std boot, and they could work great :thumb:

Why do you need an ankle strap? Ive even cut it off on some boots. Maybe because I have a low instep but never felt that it does anything
