Insurance question for the UK community

Postby apollo4000 » Mon Jan 13, 2020 6:44 pm

In theory...a vehicle with 4 x kites, 4 x boards and the rest of kit required for this time of the year in UK...comes to somewhere between 5-10k these days depending on age, condition etc. For the purposes of this question, let’s say it does. With one item the latest Duotone something at £1,400 or a Flysurfer Soul £1,700 (keep everyone happy).

I checked my car insurance with Direct Line who also provide my Home insurance and I can see them easily wriggling out of any claim for theft (see separate threat on war stories) because they exclude ‘water craft’. I also have a camper van and the insurance doesn’t cover items over £500.

How do people in UK insure their gear between house and spot or while out kiting or off paying for petrol or eating lunch while the car is unattended?

Made me think I need 3rd party policy or different insurance provider next time I renew....or a Witcher 😀

Anyone got a UK policy which gives them peace of mind while out and about?

I use these guys tailored for bikes but covers pretty much any sports equipment . Give em a call and have a chat
It’s a house insurance policy with and excess cover policy that’s pretty flexible . They tailor it for triathletes but will cover pretty much anything

NFU mutual

Had their contents cover pay out £1700 for a Flysurfer Speed 5 stolen from my company work van whilst it was parked on site. They say as long as the vehicle is locked they should pay out
Had nothing but good dealings with them for a few claims
No excess to pay either

This was two years ago but can’t imagine they’ve changed
Items over £500 (I think) get individually listed and covered alongside the standard policy. Gave them a police crime reference and they paid out pretty quick

I use Legal & General, kit is covered under 'away from home' as well, this includes holidays.

I had a TT board stolen from my local beach a few years back and they paid out. But, normally it needs to be inside the vehicle out of sight.

I know Hiscox cover kite kit, but they are not cheap.

I don't know of any company that will cover for during use.
