Caribbean alternative to Cabarete for early February

Postby gregfun » Thu Jan 16, 2020 12:23 am

Looking for a good alternative to Cabarete for early February...Barbados? We are intermediate kiteboarder, and a foiler. Thanks for any suggestions!

Cartagena is certainly one. I opted not to go there because it seems like the best beach for kiting is slightly north of the city. I prefer walking on to the beach from where I stay. Will most likely go to Cartagena one winter regardless.

I'm going to Martinique (Le Vauclin) and Guadeloupe (Sainte-Anne) in February. Not expecting fantastic wind, but my last trip to Cabarete gave me almost no wind so wanted to try somewhere else in the Caribbean - just in case there is no wind I got some new places to see - Cabarete I kind of know it all.

Barbados is pretty good in February and generally blows 18 to 22mph most days. February is not really the season for the rest of the Caribbean, Cabarete, Jamaica and Cuba will all be a big gamble in February and unlikely to get better than a few days a week.

What about Costa Rica ?

Never been to Costa Rica, but know people that have - nice, but gusty seems to be the story. Should be enough wind as far as I know. You are not in the Caribbean sea though. And I guess it depends how picky you are when it comes to the smoothness of the wind.

How is Barbados for twin tip? I know it is known as a wave spot, but are we talking Cape Town style waves or waves that are basically unrideable (or at least boring) on a TT?

The main kite beach is north of Cartagena, true.
See under SPOTS the other beaches south of the old center with nice hotels to stay at...

February isn’t a good month for Cabarete (more rain, less wind), March much better (from my experience)

Rain has never been an issue for me in Cabarete. For all the months I have been there (jan-mar) through the years I could probably count on one hand the days lost to rain. It seems to rain more now than before though (obviously can't say if that is a new trend or just random) - even so I don't think there is a difference between February and March in terms of rain. Might be my personal experience as well that there has been better wind late February/early March than early February. Statistics doesn't seem to show much difference though. Anyway - if you are looking for alternatives...

Very interested to hear if there are places unknown to me in the Caribbean. I have spent a lot of time looking for spots in that region for around February myself. Never found the perfect spot (Cabarete is close, but you will never get wind every day there in February).

Barbados is a wave spot. there are intermediates and beginners on the inside but the inside is not very big and can be crowded with beginners going back and forth and people coming in off the waves to gibe plus a few near-beach show offs, plus some shore break. So I recommend it only if you want waves. For flat water, Aruba and Bonaire are great and you can also try the Cayman islands. wind stats on ikitesurf.com are pretty reliable for all of these spots.

Lower Caribbean gets the best trade winds.
Like Aruba or Venezuela.

Roatan - Camp Bay Lodge really fun spot and if there is no wind there is a ton of things to do
