Help needed - PU-cover sealing

Postby BernieTomic1 » Wed Feb 05, 2020 5:31 pm

The PU-cover on my Core safety line has pinholes from sand, as shown on the attached photo.

I read that I could just seal it with silicone.
Going to some stores here in Denmark, I found silicone in sprayform and silicone for caulking, but nothing fitting, and noone seemed to know what I wanted to do.

What is it exactly that is needed?

Thanks!

I would carefully cut the plastic tubing off, or pull the internal rope out of the sleeving (it's poor quality if it pitted like that and is not worth repairing). Buy some 6mm (outer diameter) / 4mm (internal diameter) "polyurethene tubing" and pull the new rope through that. You need to thread a thin (2mm -4mm) rope through to attach the 4mm dyneema new centre line, wet the line and pull through the PU tubing. Really easy to do and you now have nice clear PU tubing so can see if there is any wear inside the tubing.

I used this:

I would carefully remove the tubing and throw it away. Then replace with thicker dyneema that can be easily inspected.

Thanks for the tips.

The Core PU is really something: look at this thread from last year, where my previous Core bar had a similar, but worse problem:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2402115&p=1044426#p1044426

The local shop replaced the safety line, but this is not really easy on the Core bar - afterwards, the swivel did not work anymore, and I have not used the bar a lot because of that.

This bar is the Pro version. We have different levels of expertise when it comes to taking apart a bar, and I don't really feel comfortable doing it.

Are there other, better, bars that fit well with Core kites, where you don't have this silly PU cover break constantly?

Ask your dealer for the correct parts tubing etc to replace. Depending on your location and sand etc the wear can be nothing or like your trashed sleeve. How many sessions on that bar? My suv brakes fuk early since I live in mud but my core bars live forever it seems. YMMv

Core offers the safety line in the PU as a replacement line.
With the old bar, I watched the youtube video on how to do it, and found it looked hard, which is why our local shop did it.
They told me it was tedious, and then the swivel didn't work anymore.
Both the old bar and this Pro bar got their PU lesions in Cape Town.

I ordered this now, hopefully that will seal it off.https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0792P ... UTF8&psc=1
Not feeling great about it though.

sorry, but I don't think there's much to save this one; if the hard PU tubing gets damaged, how an earth a soft silicone would stay on it? No way I would say. I too have Pro Bar for 3 years now about, much used, but no signs of this. Looking at the pic it's odd that all the damage is on the same side, same pattern, to my eye it's not some sand damage?
