Sardinia vs Tarifa in May

Postby marten87 » Tue Feb 18, 2020 10:35 am

Hey guys,

do you have any experience with kiting in Sardinia in May? I can't decide if to go to Tarifa (been there several times), or try something new and choose Sardinia instead. I'm going to rent a car anyway, so can get to basically any part of the island.

What would you suggest?

I had the same idea. You'll need a bit of luck in Sardinia for what I have read. Can be good, can be bad.
We chose for Tarifa. But both are nice I guess.

If you can afford it.
Wait until you see the forecast and then book the flight.
May is not crowded, so you won't have trouble getting a hotel or airbnb.

Cant do the same in July:)

From what I hear May is nice in Sardegna.

Great spots to choose...Tarifa is overrated. Levante is just a Dirty Wind. If you get a constant poniente, it’s nice.
But overall kitingwise Sardegna is way better.
Car needed indeed.

Party in summer in Tarifa is awesome, but also Sardegna has big party places and beautiful clubs.

Enjoy your trip

I don't know about Sardinia, but Sicily is great. The spot of "Los Stagnone" is very good (very large lagoon). And the region also offer many cultural activities and the food is great. So I guess Sardinia will offer the same.
Tarifa is also a great destination with also awesome food, cultural/historical activities and several kite spots. But the Tarifa night life is incomparable !!!
It depends on what you want to do during this trip : if only kiting then Tarifa seems a safe options. But if you want to mix kiting with visiting, then Sardinia offers you a new location to discover (especially if you have been several time in Tarifa).

Hardly scientific, but I had better wind in Sardinia then Tarifa. And as Toby implies the wind is a lot nicer in Sardinia. I'm not that sensitive to gusty wind, but a couple of the days in Tarifa felt like being in a war zone. Other days have been good. In Sardinia I never experienced anything, but fairly smooth wind.

For me the only upside with Tarifa is that the village is nicer and more things happening outside kiting than any place I know on Sardinia that is reasonably close to a good spot.

San Teodoro is a nice village, with lots of action during summer...and a beautiful kite beach close to it (La Cinta Beach)

Yeah. Not suggesting Sardinia is bad. I personally like the more quiet villages there, but Tarifa is pretty great so hard not to say Tarifa is still better - depending on what you are looking for.

I have been last year for 2 weeks in sardinia porto pollo. 3x 8qm, 2x 10qm, 2x 14qm, 2x 70kn nuke with 95kg. I liked it there but honestly you shiuldnt have any high expectations for flat water there, its mostly choppy or you do switch at 5.30pm to the windsurfer zone, but then you should be experienced due to the locals ;)

My next try will be also sicily.

I haven't been to Porto Pollo, but is it more choppy than Tarifa? In the south you can certainly find flat water at Sardinia.

Sicily also looks great by the way. Definitely on my list.
