Vertigo while Kiting?

Postby PurdyKiter » Thu Mar 05, 2020 5:34 pm

I wanted to ask a wide audience this question:
I'm 70 years old.... active in kiteboarding for 20 years.
Yesterday as I landed on a Mexico beach (solo) I was standing there and I looked up at my kite and then down at the sand and IMMEDIATELY turned super nauseous and dizzy. In a drunk state I staggered through the self-landing, loaded the car, drove 5 minute home.... All in a drunk dizzy swirling world. When got home I fell to the floor and vomited for awhile and laid there motionless for 4 hours. Then it slowly went away.

My Question: Has anyone had this struggle? And my overriding concern is What would happen if this struck while I was out on the water? Have you ever? I am certain that I could not swim in that state.

Thank You
Stuck in Mexico

Not sure how to say it, but maybe you didn’t drink enough? Dehydration makes you dizzy and you could collapse?

Alright... good simple advice. Dehydration is what caused this 5 years ago after a 50k bike ride (in Mexcio). I fooled myself into thinking I had enough water yesterday. These only happen in 88 degree Mexico and never once in The Gorge.
Thanks

I also think this is more a question for your doctor... And i find driving a car in that state as dangerous as kiting if not more...
Take care of yourself and go to the doctor.

Maybe I shouldn't be admitting this but I too get vertigo while kiting - and I'm 34.

It only happens soon after I launch and get riding - never in the middle or end of a session. It lasts maybe 30-60 seconds and it's gone. It doesn't happen every time, maybe 30-40% of the time. I chalk it up to being excited and having an adrenaline rush. It really doesn't happen to me at any other point in my life, just when kiteboarding.

Obviously a visit to the doctor is the only solution.

Obvious & common relationships, do you have any:

Vision problems
Ear problems
Neck problems
Low blood sugar problems
Adrenal problems
Taking medications

& yes, probably go see a doc. Maybe more than one, second opinions can help a lot. Good luck.

I had inner ear barotrauma when my ears and nose were clogged during an airplane landing. 3 days of the spins. It was rough. I will never fly without Afrin again.

Doctors can diagnose that on an exam.

Sun Stroke: too much sun on the Head. You get an an Irritation of the Brain Skin: dizzy, vomiting, Fever.
This is my guess.
Solution: Thick Black Base CAP with Protection also of your Neck....

Heat stroke is different. But often is a combination.

Too bright light: usually in Snow without sun glases.

Another Solution : Black Wet suit with Long legs makes legs super Hot. All blood dropps in the legs ... dizzy but Not vomiting.

Normal Dehydration does not make you vomite.

I am Not a Doktor! Go to see a Doktor!!!!
But I am one of the Surfers, that ALWAYS uses a Black Base cap.

Inner ear problems are a common cause of vertigo. As also are jet lag and low blood pressure.
