What are Ya doing, to stay Sane through this ?

Postby Bille » Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:36 pm

Closed beaches , social distancing ; how are you keeping your sanity
through all of this ?

I have a few projects , that need completing :

Build longer cross-beams for my Hobie 21; kite camping this year, will
be Way more fun, not having to deal with the 6-mile crowd ! Last
year was the first time back in the water in 4 years. After spending
the last few years flying HG and PG ; I didn't like the crowded beach
(even a little bit).

Break out the sewing machine ; got some needed repairs on kites, for
this years season .

Got a mid-sized RC biplane , that needs new covering ; can do that
late at night , without disturbing my neighbors.

Keeping the mind occupied ; it will keep me from going Insane !!!

Pulling weeds. Glad the ground is moist.

Splicing some replacement bridles for a foil kite. Making fighter kites.

But mostly pulling weeds.

Growing garlic, tomatoes, french beans, potatoes, herbs (no, not those ones), cycling once a day with Mrs Pussykin 'n stuff like that. I'm also the bread baker in the house.

Soon redecorating the house - she does the decorating and I do the lifting, no way am I holding a paint brush! She's medical and works, but I quit work over 10 years ago so I do the grocery shopping etc.

Have cleaned and serviced all my gear, normally kitesurf every day there's wind.

I'm bored.

Building a new board (special concept)
Servicing all my kites, even the old one: replacing bladders correctly, changing defective valves, etc
Inflating all of them simultaneously, to get a nice picture, I won’t do it again anytime soon
Repairing old boards
Building a turbo bar, with pulleys
Doing physical exercices I don’t bother to do usually, to come out of this even fitter than before
Learning CAD computing by myself, I always wanted to, and exercising everyday with a new part
Learning or better refreshing a new language, thanks to online course
Servicing my old bike
Servicing my mosquito harness (FLPHG)
Servicing my hang gliders
Looking for the most beautiful surf picture I can remember (Herbie Fletcher top turn), in my pile of Surfer’s journal, perfect excuse to read them again
...
Still feeling sometimes like I don’t know what to do, but I’ve got a list

What kind of HG's ?

I'm about to quit Foot-launched HG, and PG ; most dangerous part
of the flight, is the launch. Using the PG, to power my Hobie 21se, and
the Exxtacy, is getting a pod, landing gear, and engine, with a folding
prop , (that's legal in the USA) . No -- not a trike.

This year is gonna be mostly devoted to Kite boarding, and camping
on the lake.

I've got an old Tecma Boomerang XM, which qualify as intermediate, 70% undersurface, and which I've done most of my flights with, since 2007. Free flight or FLPHG. Not some many hours on it anyway, because I like to mix activities, and do really like to be on water.
I've got also a "Kite", from Bautek, intermediate as well, but not so old, light and very light handling, that I've yet to test as FLPHG.

I did really prioritized HG when I started it, over kitesurfing with which I was a bit bored at that time.
Unexpectadly, I went back to my first real passion, kitesurfing.
Main reason: I feel some much less pressure when going to have a session, so much more confident (but not overconfident), so that the balance between pressure to do it right and not putting my life at risk, and having fun, is clearly on the pleasure side. Having friends dead from HG accidents is also somewhat of a burden.

But I wouldn't quit flying, because it is still so incredible to be able to reach the clouds, flying above everything...

An Exxtacy with pod, landing gear and motor, seems like a perfect solution!
