North News:

“This is the best, most versatile kite I have ever created” - Pat Goodman - The North Reach

nkb 1.png

We’ve always dreamed of making one kite you could take anywhere. One you’d want if you were
marooned on a desert island. Picture it now - sun-bleached sand, surf pounding on the outer reef,
slicks on the inside and palms rustling in the tradewinds. An uncrowded playground where you’re
at one with the elements.

Years of kite adventures and the power of Google’s satellites under our belts, the North team set
out to find our ultimate desert island. We landed in the Philippines, primed to answer that
timeless debate:
‘If you could only pack one kite to take with you - anywhere and everywhere – what would it be?’

The Reach is the kite our master craftsman and legendary kite designer Pat Goodman calls “the
best, most versatile kite I have ever created”.

“I’ve tried to find the magic combination so you can enjoy every discipline without having a
specialised kite, says Goodman. “The Reach is for the rider who craves simplicity and doesn’t
want a big quiver. It’s the kite that will work with anything you want to put under your feet. It has
no limitations.

The Reach merges some of the best DNA from each North kite into one design that does
everything. It’s not so dedicated to doing one thing that it doesn’t do other things as well.

“If you look at the iconic Orbit, Pulse and Carve kites together, the Reach sits in the middle. The
Reach will turn faster and have a tighter turning radius than the Orbit because it’s not as flat and
open in the arc shape. It will also foil better than the Orbit, because it sits less forward in the
window. Its profile is more powerful and draft forward than the Carve, so it has more upwind
drive, and it will outperform the jumping and hangtime of the Carve. You’ll give up a little of the
drift, but it’s still going to be fun in the waves.”

Goodman says the Reach will be happy in any conditions; “You just don’t want to ride it super
wound up, because the profiles are slightly fuller, which also means the kite will produce more
bottom end power, so you can ride it smaller than usual. And in the larger sizes the Reach is a
powerful lightwind kite.

“If you’re a serious wave rider, you would still use a Carve; if you’re a serious booster, you’d still
ride the Orbit; if you’re unhooking with boots, you’ll ride the Pulse. But if you like to foil, ride some
waves, jump and loop, this is your kite,” says Goodman.

Back in the Philippines, the wind has dropped, and the sun is setting on our desert island. Jesse
Richman, Jalou Langeree and Nick Jacobsen pack down their gear after an epic day on the
water, reliving the defining moments.

Jalou Langeree didn’t know quite what to expect; “Having the Reach in my hands for the first time
kind of blew my mind, because it felt like a kite I’d been riding a ton already. It made me feel very
comfortable, especially in the conditions we had in the Philippines - from 10 to 35 knots, in
massive waves and flats. I never felt like the Reach pulled me out of the wave, and it steered the
way I wanted.” says Langeree.

Nick Jacobsen just cracks open a cold one and grins; ”The Reach is my desert island kite.”
Our team stayed at Kingfisher Resort in Pagudpud and Kitesurf Mindoro in Bulalacao, right
around the time the Philippines was double-hit by typhoons in December 2020. Huge thanks to
all the staff for making us so welcome, especially Ramon Manotok (Kingfisher) and Kathrin
Borgwardt (Mindoro). Both resorts offer full Kite Holiday packages with lessons, accommodation
and top quality rental equipment throughout the season from November to the end of April. You
can book your own desert island kite safari with Mindoro.

REACH KITE SPECS
A lively and playful all-rounder for big jumps, upwind performance and effortless relaunch, our
Reach Performance Freeride is the one kite you’ll always reach for. Your desert-island kite.
Evolved from a calculated fusion of the Orbit, Pulse and Carve, this versatile kite is designed to
excel in every condition, from wave-riding to boosts, loops and freestyle tricks, and is the perfect
match for our Sonar Foils.
The fuller profile generates power and efficiency, while it’s lighter 3-strut construction delivers
quick, responsive steering in even the lightest wind.
In the 13m and 15m, the Reach is a powerful lightwind kite, designed with a predictable,
consistent drive forward for TwinTip riding long after everyone else has gone in.

TECHNOLOGY
● Big Hangtime - open arc design for boosts and loops with a reliable catch.
● Lightwind Optimised - stable and balanced fuller profile delivers power and efficiency in
every condition.
● Quick Responsive Steering - light bar pressure and steering impulse for a fast response
with tight turning radius.
● Confident Relaunch - moderate LE Diameter and medium aspect swept design helps the
kite to release quickly from the water.
● Tactile Handling - precisely balanced for wave-riding and foiling.
● Upwind Drive - efficient, draft-forward profile.
● Freestyle Progression - a forgiving kite with power when you need it for freestyle
manoeuvres.
● Travel Light - ready for any adventure. The lightest kite in our range, with 3-strut
construction to keep the weight down for optimal steering and performance, without
compromising strength or durability.
● Aerodynamic Efficiency - we've optimised the Profile Transition Panels for an even more
efficient airflow ensuring a precise aerodynamic profile shape.
● Power on Demand - predictable, consistent power delivery with light responsive steering
● Short, no-pulley bridle - gives a more direct feeling in both steering and depower.

That is a great direction for kite design - long overdue.

Specialisation has killed competitive kiting that markets the sport directly and made it hard to focus on sport that went from a single discipline to 10+ in a matter of years (jump on the bandwagon - it could e the next big thig$ lol) all while kites got far more expensive and far more confusing to buy. Too many companies are focusing on too many model kites without a clue of what they are doing IMO... well they understand marketing.. :-0

hmmm. That 10m spot is the home of IMO the most versatile sized kite. Yes it depends where you live /and style but I still think 10m kites are THE size. Maybe a real 10.35 if being fussy (not a joke!) - not what it says on kite.

Nicely done video with some great riders. They must be hemorrhaging money. It will be interesting to see where they are in a few years.

since just about every other kite company has a do all kite in their lineup, I think the only thing new is this is marketed as the best kite ever created,

I’m guessing north will continue with their other three inferior kites. They might even add another inferior design to their lineup as they Don’t have a single strut kite yet.

It will be interesting to see if reedin stays with one kite.

I can make a 10m work, but I need at least two boards and one of them must be a foil. Three boards would be better. Or two boards and two kites. But I'd prefer three kites...

there was a little mis communication of the title...it should have been this as subtitle:

“This is the best, most versatile kite I have ever created” - Pat Goodman

Therefore the replies relating to the incorrect title have been removed.

Thx for understanding
