Cool, good to have grassroots riders involved, a great start.

Equally so it is a great shame the gka tours have such a huge conflict of interests in the world of kiteboarding world championships.

Is it right to claim an exclusive right to " world champions" while the competitions being run and funded by many of the brands with their employees in the competitions ( the large majority of competitors)

Look at surfing. While they have single event brand sponsors that many sponsor riders in the comp, the WSL themselves are made up of an independent body that minimizes conflicts of interest. This is the most important factor in legitamizing a claim to a world championship status.

It is particularly unfair on riders where their sponsor isn't part of the GKA , as they will have no say in the direction of competition via their sponsors. They are also less likely to have the funding to compete whereby the return of investment that their sponsor could get is mitigated by the fact that their sponsor brand fear their riders will not be judged fairly and/or get equal return of investment in the form of coverage (ie advertising).

Also for an exclusive world championship claim ( via world sailing wtf!) It is hardly worldly. It is super euro focused with an aussie or kiwi their as a token gesture if at all.. not that they can afford the flights anyway if they are not associated with one of the GKA brands.

It may be the end of it all, who knows. But if world championship events were to be organised, the organisation themselves running it needs to be independent from the brands.. no way you can ethically and fairly claim an exclusive right to a world championships otherwise.

Let's hope there is a major restructure back to independent world championships, and if no one has the time / money to organise one as yet , gka... don't continue to claim exclusive rights to the term world championship.

The whole issue is the value$ of the exclusive world championship phrase in marketing.

Of course money is the whole issue; however, without independence the legitimacy of the GKA in its exclusive claim to "world kiteboarding champion" is doubted by many kiteboarders, and that is not good for kiteboarding.

Makes me feel old. I used to stay with his dad Tad Ciastula who made my windsurf boards. I remember seeing him as a baby after he’d just been born. Mike

Tad also made me a couple of boards, one was his version of the Tinker tail. It broke and was repaired. It broke again and was repaired. He took the board back.

Well done Jo - a great interview & v interesting - v surprised to hear "a lot of hate" to Angela Bouillot from the beach @ KOTA & good to hear you're doing your bit for a level playing field.

Jo is clearly the leading watersports commentator and will do a lot for the sport.

Lol.. I still think of Jo, possibly 5yrs old rummaging around his Dad's shaping benches in Hayling

I was looking at my Tad surf fish (from possibly '05) - but the best board ever is my Tad Mutant - still use it regularly - shaped by Tad & lay-up done by Jo's Mum - a true watersports family !
