Dakine closes Hood river offices and lays off 39 people.

Hood River outdoor gear maker Dakine is closing its office there, laying off 39 and moving its headquarters to Southern California.

“The current health crisis, and the corresponding Oregon stay at home order were unforeseen business circumstances, and have made it financially unfeasible for the company to continue operating,” Dakine human resources director Raeanne Norberg wrote in a letter to state workforce officials.

Sad news but it is unavoidable that sales will drop for all kite gear.
Not only is kitesurfing limited at many places around the world also people buying gear might be in a financial trouble themselves because they lost their job.

I am tempted to buy some gear but I am afraid most beaches will be closed of during summer in Europe so I won’t be able to use it.
Currently some beaches are still open but with sunbathing season around the corner I fear all beaches will close down sooner or later.

Sad to see that. It underscores the importance of us supporting the companies we love. So if you all have some gear that you are wanting to buy and if you have the cash for it, now is the time.

Support your local stores and get your gear on.

This doesn’t sound like due to lack of sales but more about the stay at home order. I just saw Oregon extended their “state of emergency” order till July 6th. Completely unnecessary. No wonder Dakine can not continue operating there.

It's funny that they would mention financial issues so the alternative is moving to southern California?

Marquee Brands + JR286 = Dakine's new HQ's (most likely). JR286 is located in So Cal. Dakine could be setting up shop nearby as well. I'd bet this is the true story behind their move; Marquee is simply cutting costs.

Sure they have a lack of sales! How can you sell anything right now? Extremely difficult to keep a business alive right now. Moves like this will become the norm over the next few months. Just wait it out.

At least their are not folding all together and a few jobs stay in place. But certainly sucks for the peeps let go up there.

Have had loads of Dakine gear over the years. Based simply on the impeccable taste they have shown in their advertising alone, I will remain a customer. Their centrefolds are almost always the best shot in the entire mag. Probably the only companies that have routinely impressed me with marketing.

Exactly, SoCal is one of the most expensive places to live and operate a business. Just wait until they experience all the Cal lawsuits for everything imaginable. Doesn't seem like a smart decision to save money. Oh well, maybe the sunshine will help them start producing great products again.

I totally agree, but when you're licensed to a company that's HQ'ed in So Cal (since '89), it doesn't make much sense to own and operate two offices in separate states that are focused on the exact same tasks.
