Interesting. Where to stick that phone, though?

For jump measuring you attach your phone to the board. They are offering 20-30e water and crash proof mount.

That is so obvious, yet it took forever for someone to get it done. Kudos!
It seems wicked to me to have my phone on my board, I'd rather use it for the safety features in tough conditions. And probably buy a cheaper IP68 compatible model to use also at the beach and not care too much if it eventually gets wet or lost.

As for the real time results - has anyone tried a bluetooth headset reading out loud the woo/piq numbers after every jump? Smartwatches should be capable of this. Or the DYI displays that 'read' the woo data and show it on a decent size screen. Like this one for example:

Hi Thanks, for opening this thread. I'm the developer of the app. Also check the website www.thesurfr.app for more information.

I've been developing this app and testing it for months now, tackling a lot of challenges because of all the different phone brands out there. Finally managed to pull it off and get extremely consistent results across different phones. Actually 98% of all the phone vs phone jumps (different brands) had a deviation of less than 50CM. 80% had different of less than 30CM.

Having GPS and Internet on board adds so much possibilities. One of the dreams here for example is to have a Live Matrix leaderboard on the beach during big air competitions. Think like go-karting, you will always push your self more if you cross the finish line and you're not on top. How cool would that be.

I understand the concern regarding mounting the phone on the board. But I think the rewards are bigger than the small risk involved to must of the people. The rewards in terms of fun and safety. One of the safety features we will add is that you can draw a geofence on the map, or let the app create a geofence automatically. Whenever you and/or your board leaves the area an alarm will be send to selected contacts. Also the board can be traced back as long as the phone is on and streaming GPS and Location. Personally I've put my expensive phone inside and nothing happened with it so far. Try to kite with a buddy always and never lost my board (*knocks on wood) so far. And as a final option one could always buy a cheap Android phone (around 180 euro) which will work just fine, and costs no more than a WOO and/or PIQ.

Being connected also adds a lot of possibilities. Getting weather forecast updates pushed to your device, friend arrival, live leaderboard, lost board detection and recovery support, and a lot more.

If you're interested make sure to pre-order the mount on www.thesurfr.app. This will help us big time to estimate what we need to back-order.

Hope to see some experiences of users here soon! Regards, Herbert

Looks great - pre-ordered. Also assuming safe, having your phone with you is no bad thing if you get into trouble. Great idea. Surprised about the claim on the website that you won’t make any money on this - why not? Assuming it works I think most would be happy to be enough to make sure the company makes money and survives.
