Sliding rope harness accessory

Postby arnaudduquesne2020 » Wed Jun 03, 2020 7:58 am

Hello everyone,
We're developing an accessory for those who use sliding rope harnesses and want to still be able to use their chicken loop without detaching the security mechanism.
We've made a quick explanatory video to show our prototype. Have a look and please tell us what you think! Would this be useful to you?

Cheers

Looks cool, it's nice that you can add/remove it on a fly. So one can use it only when there is a need for it - e.g. anchor launching, changing kites with a friend, etc.
Just 2 minor downsides I can see:
- it adds some distance between rider and chicken loop
- if the rider is already using wave chicken loop without donkey stick - you can not secure the system
But anyway it's a useful, neat, small accessory to add to your gear if you are using rope harness. If the price is right I don't see why I shouldn't get one "just in case", even if I will not be using it on a regular basis.

Very good idea! Is it strong enough for jumping?

My main concern would be the use of aluminium material for a load bearing part. I expect that this aluminium part will be strong enough to take very high loads for low numbers of cycles. However, I suspect it would be susceptible to fatigue after a high number of cycles. Aluminium is particularly susceptible to fatigue cracks.. the crack can easily begin to form from a small scratch or impact on the surface of the metal.

I would highly recommend testing this part for thousands, if not 10's of thousands of load cycles, and also test it after having some surface dings and scratches like you would typically expect a used part to have from normal wear and tear.

Remember that there are many different brands of stainless steel spreader bar hooks which have failed due to fatigue... and stainless steel is significantly stronger material.

While the kite is at 12:00 how easy it to take out the Donkey Dick then take the Chicken loop out and then reinsert Chicken loop then Donkey Dick?

Thanks for your great feedback everyone.
We have to carefully balance the size of the accessory so that it keeps the kite as close as possible to the rider, whilst still allowing easy chicken loop insert and removal.
Safety first: We regularly have our other products tested to have them certified, so this one would definitely also undergo rigorous stress test before being launched.
We think this accessory would suit instructors who share a kite with a student, or riders who change kites often in variable wind conditions..
(Also, Do you guys have any name Ideas?)

Retarded. Making gear specifically just for instructors is stupid. 99% of kiters shouldn't even be using chickenloops, especially not with sliders. This is like the click loop fad. The industry can't even recognize it is wasting design effort on a product that is completely wrong....

Hmm,

Dynabar already has something like this and it's secured in a similar way.

I never liked it coz it's difficult to hook in since everything moving at once.

Loose the sharp edges tho.

Great idea, congrats.

I wonder if it could catch or pinch on the harness or bar and lines in a crash, or at the end sides of the harness, or if load pressure changes quickly. Maybe grinding the edges would help round them. The longer length could be handled with a shorter chicken loop or less slack in the slider rope.
