Duotone Rebel 2020 vs RRD Addiction 2020

Postby kitesonic » Wed Jun 03, 2020 9:47 am

Good morning folks,

Firstly, thank you to accept my request to be part of the group.

I am looking for to buy a brand new Kite here in Portugal, but I blocked at 2 questions:

1. Should I buy the Duotone Rebel 2020 or RRD Addiction 2020?
2. Kite 9 or 10?

My goal is 100% Freerider / Big Air.
I'm 158cm tall, 53Kg and the wind average here is around 12 to 18 knots

I really would like to hear the pros and cons since It is gonna be my first brand new kite.

Thank you so much and good winds.

Depends if you want reactive/lively steering or not. One or other is not better just a personal preference people have.
The addiction will have more reactive fast and playful steering, and the rebel will be more of set it and forget it thus less likely to get away from you if you’re not paying attention to it. If you’re not sure which you like yet, then youre better off to continue buying used/closeout models imo

Can't comment on the RRD, but I switched to Rebels at the start of the year and I think they are brilliant. Anything below 16 knots and I'd be on my foil, but in 16-18 knots I'm happily kiting on an 11m and I am 106kg. The wind range is so big on the Rebel, I don't think you'd see much difference between the 9 and the 10 top end, so if the wind is predominantly at the lower end of your scale I'd go with the 10, but its such a personal choice. I have a 9m Rebel as well and it is a sweet size. At your weight it would probably work.

Gotcha. I think I will do with something less reactive. My goal is to have a safe and enjoyable ride with some jumps. It shows me that I am more Rebel even if I have to pay a little more. Thank you

Thankx Simon. I will probably get a number 10 since my board only has 133 cm and the wind is most around 14 knots.

I have used a 9m RRD Addiction but it was some years ago, have not tried the latest one. In general it was a very pleasant and stable kite. For me (80kg) the 9m was a high wind kite (when it was blowing over 10m/s). Addiction is (or was?) a relatively high aspect ratio kite, at that time it was positioned as a race kite. It did not have much low-end grunt but was nice and well controlled in stronger winds.

Hi Everyone,

I'll add my 2 cents...

I have never rode an RRD kite, but a few local guys have the addiction and it looks like a beauty. The canopy material is heavy duty and the kite looks super stiff and excellent quality... plus i'm jealous of that waterproof bag that turns into a changing mat and seat cover! I've read online that the low end is great, and I can confirm that those guys are always riding even when its light.

As for the Rebel, I have rode this kite the past several years (currently on Dice) and have always had a blast on it. This kite is well behaved and really helped me to progress my riding. It was great for me as an intermediate rider looking to improve, but it still has plenty of top end performance to keep me motivated as I got better. My girlfriend learned on this kite and she prefers it over other kites to this day. Great wind range, park and ride potential, huge sweet spot and super easy boosting! The rebel rides pretty true to size. I've rode 7,9,12 and they all have great range with good depower. It flies aggressively forward in the window and is FAST and always engaged, so if you're looking to ride waves, unhook, etc... then maybe there are better options.

My last comment would be on resale value, can't speak on RRD, but the Duotone kites tend to hold value well, and are easy to resell.

Happy shopping!

53kg???
You want only one Kite????

Just my opinion:
Both kites are great 5 struts high wind, high Performance kites.

Both are totally wrong for you.

Get a Allround kite with three struts, freeride.

In 18kn I can use 7m freeride/wave kite with lots of fun (75kg) / small twin tip.

Get some older model for half price and get 2
Kites.

If I would start again, I would get 14-10-7.
For you 10-7 (no matter 12-9-7 also ok)

Remember 53 kg is Aprox 30 kg less than avarage rider.

That means you will NEVER get the kite to be overpowered. So you might even look for some one strut kites.

Just my oppinon

I really appreciate your message.

The point is that I am able to get only one kite at the moment and for safety I don´t trust the used ones. I really want to buy a brand new kite. In the end, if I have to move from another place again I can sell it for a good price and fast or even keep it and use for at least a few more years.

Thank you tho.
