Best downwinder kite?

Postby Voeah » Sun Jun 07, 2020 7:54 pm

I am wondering what kite sits deepest in the window? I am doing a really long downwinder and would like to know what kite to take for this kind off stuff. Also want to know if that kind of kite would be good to (learn to) foil with.

The downwinder is that long (130kms) that you want to go straight downwind. On shorter downwinders it doesn’t really matter, I agree

Not any high aspect kite in general. Those are great for boosting but suck even for short downwinders

We used to have a local downwind race many years ago. It was only about 32 km but the winners rigged the biggest possible kite they could launch and maneuver onto the water.

On a waveboard...a good wavekite. They can serve pretty well on a foil. You could at a onestrutter like the Ben Wilson Vibe. I have one that serves me well for foiling. I'm crap at foiling, though, don't take my word for it. It's not a bad drifter in the surf either.

On TT, any good free ride kite. Most 3 strut freeride kites are medium aspect, will sit nicely where you want them.

Of course, big air can be fun. Just very demanding on legs and core.

All you need to learn to go downwind fast is ride toeside and point the board straight downwind. If your kite is big enough and the wind strong enough you can find a sweet spot for the kite at around 10-11 o'clock in front of you and slightly to the side (giving just a little lateral pull you resist to keep the board slightly on edge to avoid too much slamming). I ride the section from Bloubergstrand to Big Bay in Cape Town like this and it is a blast in big swell on a surfboard and even a TT, and much faster and more direct than folks trying to broad reach back and forth. Every kilometer or so change to the other leg forward. If you have good swell like in Cape Town you can do some really fast riding on the swells like this. This is using Pivots, which are what I use for everything, foiling included, albeit I'm not an expert at that.
