17m kite Overkill

Postby beebad » Mon Jun 29, 2020 8:57 pm

I thought a 15m Contra kite was pretty big.
A 17m is unimaginable.

I guess if a 17m will fly it would definitely be a session saver?

Thoughts?

Yes, it's a session saver. But the best use for a 17 Contra IMHO is to ride it powered in the same wind speeds others are riding 14-15 m LEI's. The 17 m Contra is relatively heavy so, while it's a good light wind machine, it can't compete with large foil kites in very light wind. But it's a great airstyle kite when powered. Because so many people are now foilboarding with smaller kites in light wind, there are some good deals to be had on the 17 (and 19) Contra.

Bigger kite with power is great fun and makes you land more tricks than with any smaller kite.

Do you have any experience on a modern 17m?

I once owned a 2011 17m fat lady. It got me a lots of extra time on the water while I was learning, but after having roughly 3-4 years experience, I found it to be more annoying than useful. I replaced the 17m with a 14m NRG several years ago and I loved the 14m. But these days I only foil below 15kn so I haven't even used my 14 in over a year.

I wonder how a 2020 Zephyr would feel compared to a 2020 14.5m OR flight (NON-Alula)

My last season on a 17 m Contra was in 2015. Like you, I loved the 14 m LF NRG (also had a 16 m NRG that I didn't like as much). Now my largest LEI is a 14 m Cab. Apollo, which is a great kite for my TT riding style. But (like you) I usually foilboard now when the wind is too light for the 14 m. :thumb:

I flew my cloud 17m in ~7knots with my spaceskate foil :P Very over powered but learnt how to duck tack under it.

I have Gaastra Spark 17 and 12. (52cm Bar)
With a big Twin Tip I go out as one of the First. I start Jumping around before others even think about pumping up a 12m.

Is it fun?
Yes, it is slow
Yes, it it huge
Yes, it will never be super radikal…

For me it is fun!
You can load and Pop, not high, but for me enough!
You can get some hangtime, Not high, not long.

Session Saver!!!
To get real: I can not afford, to Drive two hours one way and not go out kiting.

As soon, as Wind get‘s to constant 12 Knots (on my Personal 10 year old windmeter – whatever that is in real knots) I take the 12.

One big Problem: If I can Start kiting, nobody is at the Beach to Launch my kite 👍

For Foiling it is not good. One strut kite would be better (I guess)

I’ve had some of my best sessions on my Contra 15 with lots of flat water and just cruised. I’ve got to try the 17 which is still new in the bag, never pumped. I was on a 17 years ago and it was fine but the visual that shocked me was the guy launching (over 6ft tall) it with the kite looked to be 3 times as tall as the guy launching it.

A 21m Soul foil kite is a true session saver. More power, better jumps, better hang-time and believe it or not more top end than a 17 Contra.

ummm.. back in the day I had a Naish 22 Meter C kite. Loved it. Had humungous airs launching off waves. I somehow also came into possession of a North 20 meter C kite. It pulled like a mack Truck and I was lucky to get back to where i started from.
