Upgrading old Cabrinha bar to 2020 Modular QR.

Postby appelton » Tue Jun 30, 2020 6:53 am

I have 2019 Cabrinha Overdrive Bar and I was thinking if it's possible to upgrade it to the new 2020 Modular System.
I was looking at the parts and I've found Cabrinha 2020 Modular QR Body
https://www.aquatichero.com/cabrinha-20 ... ar-qr-body

Has anyone tried upgrading their bar with this QR part ? It seems like it should work.

I am also interested if the parts fit, from what I have researched this should be possible for 2017 onwards. I wrote an email to Cabrinha with that question, but they never replied to it.

Unfortunately, Cabarina has yet to get the modular bars & parts made. As a dealer, the latest we were told was August, so I'd say after labor day they'll actually be in stores. We were also told it would work going back for sure at least until 2017 (I don't recall exactly what year we were told but I know 2017 because that was the Fireball year).

@drofatts - yes, when I look at instruction how to convert 2017 QuickLoop QR to FireBall, the swivel handle looks identical to 2020 modular swivel. So in general one should be able to upgrade 2017+ QR to 2020 modular QR exactly the same way.

I loved my 2016 Trimlite bar yet the caveat is that it wasn’t a good bar for foiling - too short of a throw and too little trim distance. Yet again, as jumping bar - amazing.

My solution was later to have a twintip/jumping bar and a simple foiling bar with long throw and lots of trim.

Idea of modular bar is awesome though.

I asked Cabrinha about upgrading to the modular system. They said the swivel attachment in same from 2017 onwards and it is easy to fit.

I use a trimlite 54cm bar with all my smaller kites. I do nothing but foiling in all conditions. It works fine.

I have a secret weapon for big kites. I made up a 60cm bar using Cabrinha spare parts. I replaced the trim adjusting bungy line with a very long length on dyneema. It gives me 50cm of trimmer travel. That is easy to do. Alternatively you can just make longer pigtails.

The end result is a combined bar throw and trimmer travel of about 90cm. I often go out on my 12m, rigged for minimum power, then just pull in more and more trimmer. It's doable up to about 25knots. Tacks are stupid easy with that much power. ;-)

My current experiment is to make a long travel trimless bar. I have a Recoil mainline and that gives 70cm of bar throw without all the springs and stuff. I have used a 70cm throw bar with rear line trim adjusters. It's not too bad with a smaller kite and/or short lines just using the bar throw. I quite like the clean look of the centre lines with no trimmer.

@OzBungy - that is good news! I will convert my 2017 bar to modular QR and rope slider attachment. But first Cabrinha has to start selling the replacement QR body for 2020 modular system.

As OZBungy explains above, change the Trimlite depower line with a Recoil one, cost peanuts.
You'll need also the longer 'Recoil' lower safety line or just extend yours. And adjust the front/rear line lengths with pigtails.

Can't wait. I've preordered the new QR. It shouldn't be that difficult to replace the one.
