If struts leak, will leading edge also leak on a one pump max flow system?

Postby ERock82 » Sat Jul 11, 2020 6:23 am

This might sound like a dumb question... My leading edge bladder has not been holding air anymore after repairing it. If for some reason any of the 3 struts are leaking air also, will they cause the leading edge to deflate as well on a one pump max flow system? I'm about to buy a $150 leading edge replacement bladder and if the struts need replacing too it might not be worth messing with. I can't see why they would have leaks too but it is very hard to tell. Thanks in advance!

Yes, it will leak too.

You need to close the locks on the tubes, then the strut only will leak, that has a hole.

I had an RRD Obsession that had a hole in the tube. That was hard to find.

If the locks are not closed, then if you are out on the water and lose a strut, the whole kite deflates and you have a swim in. I used to not lock/pinch the tubes from the leading edge to the struts and one day while my kite was on the beach, a strut blew and the whole kite deflated in a matter of minutes. After that I locked/pinched the tubes. Also some older kites have a one-way valve from the leading edge to each strut that is internal and each strut has a deflate valve. My Yarga hybrid has this configuration. No need to pinch/lock a tube.

I never waste time closing the "locks", often I remove them fully.

No reason to buy a new bladder, just repair the hole in the front bladder and strut.

Start repairing the front, while possible to pump it up really hard, and keep your new bladder as a spare.

Or repair the strut, takes no time as so small and easy, and use the new front bladder.

Short version is : You need to learn to find holes, as changing bladders is costly, but more important there could be days you can not go out if waiting for one :o
And you have to do all the same work removing and reinstalling everything.
