Naish Hawaii close down due to Covid 19

Postby UKSurf » Fri Jul 24, 2020 8:39 pm

Was just doing some research into Robby Naish and how much he is actually worth. Came across this sad news that his parents shop in Hawaii have had to close after 40 years due to the pandemic:

That is really sad.
A shop with big history.

Hopefully their pension is good and they can enjoy the work free life now, and spend more time on the water.

Sad. Used to buy windsurf sails from them mail order.
Some Super rich person will rent the space and it will be a hobby business. Happening in my town, billionaires wives or famous people have stores that lose vast sums of money every year. Makes them feel like they are doing something constructive. No real businesses can afford the obscene rents unless they are satellite corporate stores.

Hate to hear this, but not surprised after seeing stores on Maui close over the last couple of years - Hawaiian Island after decades in business, and the Naish store also.

One thing I thought was that if Robby Naish was super rich he might have just bailed them out. I am sure he has made a bit from windsurfing and kitesurfing, but maybe not as much as some might think. Unfortunately the future of retail was looking pretty bleak before Covid19 - after the pandemic it might as well be the apocalypse.

He probably offered but was turned down. It sounds like the business couldn’t sustain itself and wasn’t viable anymore so it’s time for it to end. The $7,800 monthly rent seems really high.

Would have been hard place to teach kiting with such little beach space, but with the wingfoiling, would have thought it would be ideal.

40 years is pretty amazing, friends have been lucky to last 3 years in this kind of business working 50 hour+ weeks, and ended up with debt.

Kailua mostly gets 12-16 knots which isn't great for learning to wing, much better off in Maui. They do get a good share of 20 knot days but they are not the norm.

Wonder why their rental and teaching business got shut down?
