4 weeks kitesurfing in September - Corona

Postby WillemsD » Fri Aug 07, 2020 8:49 am

Hi folks,

I have a 4 week holiday coming up in September and I’m still looking for the perfect destination.

Before corona etc. I was planning to go to Brazil but that doesn’t seem to be a good idea now.

Current plan is to go to Greece and visit Naxos and Paros.
I read mixed stories about these destinations, they are also not beginner friendly (for my travel fellowship).

Does anyone have other good ideas for September kiting? I don’t mind flying far - I just want to be able to enjoy without any crazy corona dynamics (e.g Brazil).

Thanks & best,
Daan

Egypt is another option.
Warm, windy, cheap and perfect for beginners.
Still restrictions from EU countries, but that might change until September.

Also check Sardinia, Italy...beautiful island with good winds.

Depends. The only place that seems completely free from the risk of sudden random lockdowns is Sweden.

Just came back from there...really relaxed...just keep distance. And good winds too.

Yeah. Sweden is cool. Didn't know about the wind where you went. You also got the west coast - so some options.

The Stavanger area in Norway also works (not that you'll get wind every day), but staying in Stavanger for 4 weeks will be ridiculously expensive. And even if kiting was never restricted in Norway our politicians are slightly less rational than the Swedes when it comes to Covid-19. So risk of some sort of lockdown is a tad higher - even if it with almost 99% certainty will not be restricted here either.

Not sure what is happening in Greece, but they now have more Covid-19 cases so they might close down again? Would be absurd to me to do so, but that doesn't matter if it happens and one is stuck there not being allowed to kite.

I went to the east coast, Karlskrona.

Best spot is Torhamn for all westerlies.

For Easterly there are several spot Along the coast to the north...Kristianopel has perfect flats.

Not daily wind, but not that bad.

Plus a very beautiful nature.

I live in Southern Sweden. Been windsurfing and kiting here since 2001. September can be good. Its all frontal low pressure winds. Easterly wind is rare in September. Might get NE then SE coast is great. Generally westerly or SW. Wind is wildly variable, from 6 to 15+ m/s.
The only spots id say that are beginner friendly are on the coast from Råå south to Lomma ( just north of malmö). There are 3-4 spots for beginners. Lomma/ Habo Ljung are right next to each other and have knee deep 200 m out at " Habo".
So be prepared to drive around, bring a 5-4 full suit, booties and gloves. I might even wear a hood on cold days. You have to be careful, this is the season most accidents happen, on days its 10-13 m/s a 20 m/s squall can come through.
Your not going to hanging out on the beach unless you have winter clothes.
That said , there are weeks when its a nice 18-22 c and no wind. Thats when you might get moderate Easterly.
