We kite Lake Mohave on the Colorado River. Summer brings warm water, thermal winds in the afternoons and plenty of sun. On the Nevada side there is beach launching at a few sites. My side, Arizona has limited access and we generally launch from a boat. This past weekend I was stuck without a buddy to help with this approach. So I ventured to one of the few beaches on the AZ side to solo kite. Long story short I lost my foil board while launching. Understand the shores of Lake Mohave are lined with cliffs, submerged trees, scattered reeds and in general are not navigable on foot. So after securing my gear onshore I began a downwind swim to search for my board in mangroves several hundred yards to leeward. Once there I eventually spotted the board tangled in submerged tree limbs. The thought of swimming back upwind in now 20mph chop was Not appealing. So I opted for foot travel as I could sight a beach through the overgrowth. Once there, foil board on shoulder, I began to bushwhack through the scrub. As I emerged crouched from a tunnel of vegetation I stood to find an angry wild burro barreling toward me! Before I had a chance to react he head butted me in the chest spinning me to the side. Immediately he the took a big bite into my left tricep! Fortunately I had a rashgard on and the fact this equine has no incisors the bite didn't result in a loss of tissue. All this occurred in an instant. My mind could only process the thought of "don't get kicked". The burro retreated and I could then see a herd of 4 or 5 of them! The thought turned to "don't get trampled" and "don't let them damage the foil"
These are skidish animals in general and true to their nature they retreated further and allowed me to pass. I must have startled them. I've always viewed our lake kiting as safe from an animal encounter perspective. Who knew! Beware of the wild burros!

I’ve always thought foiling was more dangerous
Just not for that reason!
