What's the best twin tip for chop that is good for knees ?

Postby appelton » Mon Sep 14, 2020 4:19 pm

Can someone advise on a good chop eater that is gentle for knees?

Currently I am looking at :

- Shinn Monk Glitch ( The new one 2020 that has some gentle channels at the bottom )
- Shinn Ronson
- Flysurfer Radical 6
- Lieuwe Shotgun

Anyone tried Radical 6 and Ronson ?

I can't compare them, but my Shinn Ronson Player is by far the smoothest board I have ever ridden.

I might not be the best reference though as I have never really had any issues with my knees riding.

Should add kold shapes polar to the list.

If you just want smooth and you don't jump much the Ocean Rodeo Mako is smoother than any other boards. I personally find my Axis Limited very good in the chop it does everything well. Of all the board I have tried the Carved Imperator is the only one that I found to be smoother bedsides the Mako but the Axis is close and tracks upwind better.

Mako is interesting for sure but I am thinking of getting Mako Duke as a fun surfboard.

Over the years it has always been the Mako 150 that I go back to when the knees start hurting. I've tried the Mako King and although it's great on the coast in waves I found it heavy and lacking in a twin-tip sense.
I've also owned the Mako 140 but it needed a ton of wind before it was fun. Must be for tiny people.

I've ridden the Shotgun (can't remember what size) and it was very comfortable in the dreadful North Sea chop. It's ridiculously expensive though imo.

If you're interested, check out the Crazyfly raptor. Much more affordable and is very comfortable as well, the smaller sizes boost like cannons too.

For me, 70kg, it was the Mako 140. Carving, boosting and chop was fun. The ride is like a fresh powder session.

The Mako 150 is incredibly good at smoothing out chop but it is very power hungry. Mine may be more power hungry than the latest models as it has probably acquired some extra rocker over the years. So as ever try to get a demo.

Generally speaking I prefer to have a board with some bottom shape for chop and so something like the shotgun with its channels may well be a good compromise.

I've had 2 x Shinn Monk, 1 x Shinn Ronson, 3 x Lieuwe Shotgun.

I have a knee with a badly damaged ACL.

I'm 80kg and ride a Lieuwe Shotgun 136 x 40.5

I think this answers your question.
