Double action pump noob question

Postby knuthansen » Mon Sep 14, 2020 5:53 pm

I used to do this:
Pump the kite with the single stroke inflation, or whatever else you call it high volume mode of my pump first, then changed to double action at about 6 psi to decrease resistance and make things easier.
Using e g. Core and Eleveight pumps.

Used to work fine a few sessions, then some of my kites started doing this:
Seemingly closing off the valve after changing the mode, so no air could get in. Changed mode on pump again, worked fine, changed back again, same problem.
So the only way to use double action with that kite was to deflate it completely and then use double action right from the start.

Can anyone enlighten me wtf is going on here?

I'm really surprised.
I go double action for low resistance phase (to get volume in).
When the inner pressure rises I would go to single action, to pump only while pressing down the pump (If I would).

You do vice versa?
2nd point:
What kite brand (valve type) do you use?

It’s meant to other way around. Single action for last high pressure bit, dual action for the start.

Not sure how well the dual action can handle the high pressure part. Maybe that’s why you are experiencing some issues.

Yeah high volume mode first, what I mean.
Used 2010 Ocean Rodeo with these ancient valves, as well as Switch Nitro 7 with Boston valve.

Yes what the others say, first double to pump fast and finish with that of switch over to single.. your way makes no sense.

no, perhaps yr intro description was wrong.

Boston valve
If what you describe happens with a Boston valve, this is not related to the valve.
Perhaps yr pump does not switch from single to double (or vice versa, we don't understand yr description) , when under pressure.
Would you try to reproduce with or without pressure on the pump hose?

Double action pumps, pump on both the up and down strokes. Using double action pumps the kite up quicker. However, as pressure increases so does resistance making it harder to pump the kite to proper pressure. Opening the cap/valve changes to single action, pumps only on down stroke, reducing this resistance making it easier to top off the kite to proper pressure.

Sounds like your pump needs some maintenance. Try another pump to confirm. The valves inside the pump that facilitate double action are sticking or broken. I believe that the Core pumps are rebuildable. Or replace the pump.

Maybe you wrongly put the tube onto the other opening at the pump and you wrongly think you activate the single pump with that. If you do that, you activate the deflation. The tube has to stay in the opening, there´s another small "pin" that you must remove to activate the single pump.

Hi knuthhansen. This is not going to be helpful. Please do not take offense. Hoping you get a laugh
After reading this thread an old slang/saying you hear occasionally came to mind. Peace

Remove tube from pump and place one end in inflate valve on kite.
Insert the other end and " Blow it out your arse "
