Kiting women - becoming more?

Postby Toby » Thu Sep 17, 2020 11:57 am

In Brazil I noticed so many female kiters.
Never saw as many as this year, that’s awesome.

I wonder if this is a phenomenon in Brazil only, or do you see more on your local beaches as well ?

When I was selling my gear I had mostly girls contact me which was weird, they are also the worst! Trying to negotiate like there is no tomorrow ...

Has risen over the last years, but not that much. Still a 10 to 1 ratio in the summers, rough estimate. In the winters a lot less. You clearly see them more at beginner friendly spots. Kiteschool groups are often with more women, still not as much as men, but 40-60 maybe. My guess (also because I had some female kitebuddies in the past) is that a lot of times they are not prepared to commit to the sport, because they still prioritize other activities more. And then they will eventually lose interest or have just a handfull of sessions each year.

The key question I'd ask is whether kiting attracts more or less women compared to other sports or comparable sports if we can find. What I'm seeing in terms of age group is the opposite to what's happening with men. Lot of younger women and older men. Looks like men don't drop off as much and some take up kiting in middle age or rather move on the foiling before too many knee injuries

Last weekend we were almost 50/50 on the water for awhile.

Strangely enough the most male dominated place I have ever kited was in Brazil. Hardly saw a single girl/woman kiting.

Local beach in wales, 2 ladies run the local kite school, plus there's 3 more that kite semi regularly, considering there's only about 6 guys that regularly kite this beach that's a good showing by the ladies.. kiting is a equal opportunities sport..
