Kite size?

Postby giogk » Sat Sep 19, 2020 4:32 pm

Hello,
86 kilo rider looking for a LEI kite for freeriding at around 12 knots( local spot usual conditions). Already owner of an Airush Sector 54 lightwind surfboard. Any suggestions? Thinking of an Airush Ultra 14m. Maybe need 17m kite?

Consider an Ocean Rodeo Flite 14.5 or even 17. I watched a guy using the latest 17m and it was amazing how it would fly (and relaunch when dropped) in light winds.

I would hazard a guess a 17m would be overkill, I'm about 82kgs. I get good results with a 12m and a sector 60 as long as there is stable flight. If I was going to get another large kite a 14m would give me extra security and momentum to ride toeside.

Or ... forget the big kite & invest the money in a foil instead. More challenging, more fun, able to go upwind easily etc.

Get yourself a 10m soul. Will give you the same power as a 17m wirh more lift quicker , more hangtime in less wind and still keep you on the water down to lei 9m weather. Huge range, huge power huge hangtime. Can’t go wrong!

Are you kidding me? A 10m Soul in 12 knots??? Maybe on a foilboard, but not on a twintip, if you weigh 86 kilos. The 15m Soul has the same power as a 17m LEI. The 10m Soul has the power of a 12m LEI. The hangtime is excellent on a 10m Soul in 25 knots.

I would recommend an 18m Soul or Sonic if you want to have fun and actually jump in 12 knots. A 21 Soul is also a good choice. So many riders are afraid of big kites, they go out in light wind conditions with huge boards and 15m kites and mow the lawn.

The wind where I live is regularly 12 knots. Sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less. Most of the riders are convinced that you have to ride a foilboard in those conditions to have fun, but I have a great time on my big foil kites.

Mate I a great time on my 10 soul and door in 12 knots. Loads of people got the big versions of the soul near me and o am still out on the same conditions and having fun.
The launch area isn’t great at my area. I had the 15 it was slow and boring. Tried the 1/‘ that was better. But still slow. Sold or bought the 10m. Much better! Do have experience or the larger sizes. Just have more fun on the 10m

14m LEI kite would be enough for 12 knots. 17m is overkill.
