Best Kite for strapless + freeride

Postby mk23 » Mon Sep 21, 2020 2:16 pm

Hi all!
I'm looking to upgrade my kites gear (currently using Cabrinha Switchblade 11m and 8m).
My weight is 83KG and I like to surf at 15-35 Knots with TT and strapless.

I would love to hear what do you think about the following options:
- Option 1: 12m + 9m - Naish Pivot (2021)
- Option 2: 12m + 9m - Reeding Supermodel (2021)
- Option 3: 12m + 9m - Fone Bandit (2020)
- Option 4: 11m + 8m - Duotone Neo(11) and Dice(8) (2020)

Any thoughts or advices would be super helpful!
Thank you all! :)

If you go Pivot I would suggest 8 and 11m for those windspeeds, indeed if you are serious about surfing strapless in 35 knots you will need a 5m too, and no need for 2021 kites, the 2020 kites are 2/3 price now and basically the same except for graphics and an available adjustment to the leading edge attachment of the bridle that extends wind range a little.

I have not ridden the other three.

At a guess, for me 80kg with 2 kites I'd say 10m for 15 knots strapless with 7m for 35 knots TT.

But if you want 15 knots on a TT you'll need 12m and for 35 knots on a TT you'll need no larger than 7m (you can hold down more than 7m but in 35 knots it all gets a bit silly in the gusts).

Option 5: Dice 12 + Dice 9 :D

It's exactly my gear from 2016.. Riding strapless and TT in some days. My weigh is 80kg aprox. I'm selling my 2020 ones with less than 5 sailings, as news if you are interested...

Am 84kg and ride the same range mostly strapless surfboard. I have a 12,9,7 quiver. Don't use the 7 much where i live but its a must have, cant miss those days. Just switched from a 12m Reo to 12m Enduro. The Enduro is more versatile and goes upwind better on marginal days. Still prefer Reo for surfboard when wind is solid. If i rode more twin tip i would consider all Enduros. The Enduro on wave setting is really good on waves and also jumps well. The Reo loops great and jumps ok but has no float.

Congrats on the weight loss, losing over 100kgs is impressive ;)

Imho you can't do that with 2 kites & 2 boards only at 83kg. I weigh about the same.

At your low-end
  • Twintip: you really need a powerful 11/12m kite. I've got the Pivot which is quite powerful but I'd need an 11 & no current/small waves to have any fun
  • Strapless surfboard: if you have waves non-dependent on wind at your spot, this may be fun but you would need a very quick kite with excellent drift to pull it off. On my spot, there are only tiny waves at 15 knots and I will try with my Ultra 12m but really, it's not a lot of fun
At your high-end
  • Twintip: at 35knots I wouldn't want to be out on a 9 or even an 8. Pivot 7 would be more than enough.
  • Strapless surfboard: as said above, I'd need a 5 or 6 at most, maybe even a 4 would be best choice. Again, waves are wind-dependent on my spot and at 35knots they're up :)
The strapless board you ride at 15 knots is likely not useful at 35 knots. The twintip can be used for both circumstances if you choose it wisely.
