I hated riding on small boards starting out. Being more experienced it doesn't bother me much, but then again I cannot remember last time it felt like I was losing my edge because the board was too big (140x43 at 1.98m and 100kg+-). And I like to ride more powered up than most (most "normal" kiters not jumping 20m+, KOTA or whatever).
Also not all boards are the same of course. Reminds me a bit of buying saddles for bikes. In the end you kind of have to test them out. 138x41 is hardly going to be terribly wrong I would say.
Yeah, this. Beginners should be on bigger boards, but once you decide which discipline/conditions you spend the most time doing, start swapping gear to your preference.

I am actually 189cm, believe something about 6'2'' if my imperial meassurement skills help me now, but I would agree with our coallegue FlandOBOX. In my case I am using Duotone Jaime 136cm, and usually using kites 1 number bigger than usual. Its being useful for big air jumps and hooked tricks and I even do some basic unhooked when wind is not powered enough and I have no complains about it. For higher performancein big air and hooked freestyle I would believe thaaaaaat you might change for a 138 or a 136 cm board
