Use a wavekite with a twintip?

Postby samo421 » Tue Oct 06, 2020 6:07 pm

Hello, Im looking at getting a 7m kite for stronger winds 25+ as I only have a RRD Passion 10.5m atm but don't really want to spend a huge amount of money. I looked at The RRD RELIGION MK7 7m which is only £450 new however it is a wave kite mainly. Also im 76kg

Anyone know if this Would this be good enough for freeride/upwind and small jumps with a twin tip in this wind or should i not bother using a wave kite? I have a 138x41 north Gonzales board. Thanks

You can do pretty much anything with any kite.

You can make the combo work but its generally sub-optimal. If you are going to go for it try to pair the wave kite with a board that has alot of upwind drive, usually a squarer outline or just a bigger board (or both). A 138 for a rider your weight in those winds should work with a wave kite for what you describe. Wave kites like to sit deep in the window and it affects the angle you can effectively edge a twin tip at, making it harder to point upwind compared to TT kites - the opposite extreme would be an Rebel or an Edge (these are kites that fly at the edge of the window making upwind easy).

If you are not wedded to that kite deal you might want to consider something with wave/freeride crossover ability like an open c kite.

I kite at the Witterings. When it's windy enough to use a 7m, a wave kite will work fine because the sea is frequently a mess and control is more important than speed. I don't know anything about RRD Religions, but £450 is a nice price.

FYI I'm 80kg and use a 7m Enduro V2 in 25+ knots on a Lieuwe Shotgun 136x40.5

I have 12 and 10.5 Obsessions and an 8m mk7 religion. I only ride twin tip. The religion is a great kite. Goes upwind as well as any other and jumps great too.
My only niggle is it’s pretty heavy on the bar.
I did have a 7m vision until I destroyed it at the weekend so am looking for another, but I wouldn’t hesitate at getting a 7m religion if one come up cheap, but I’ve only used the 7 once since getting the 8 so can’t justify spending a great deal on a kite that might only get used once a yr.

Hell yes. It is also a good option because it tends to be a tad more stable. I love the 7 slash for lit TT riding. I dunno about the kite you are asking, but generally I would think most wave oriented kites would have similar qualities?

No problems at all, in fact a wave kite might be better when windy and gusty :thumb:

Just go for it.

If you believe the bulls@3 marketers working for kite companies these days (desperate to make buying kite equipment like buying a mobile phone plan in 2005) kiteboarding 2020 - it's a bad option.

I have kited triple overhead reef breaks on a torch (freestyle kite) , and boosted to the moon on a wave kite (neo).

I use Religions, though rarely on a TT. But that's not because it doesn't work. It works, though it likes boardspeed, so its low end is not very good on a TT. Its topend is, though, so if you use it in strong winds, it will do you fine. You'll jump, but not quite to the moon.

Do it!
