A nice video on the subject. It's in French but easily understandable.

That’s a good video. Thanks for sharing. I’ll have to play with the kite on its back to the side. Good thread.

He shows the palms on top for both hands and I was taught this technique for working up the lines, but never really understood why?

All very well on a calm day. I prefer to release to flag out on a cranking gusty day.

Self launch can cause issues too, but starting them on their back seems to work well.
I hadn’t thought of that.
So do you just follow the self land procedure (as in video above) in reverse?
Same way we used to launch c kites but don’t try and fold the tip. Just weight the canopy with sand or a sand bag, pull on the downwind front line, the tip rises, sand/bag falls away and off you go, very easy and no dragging.

Just so I get this on self landing:
Top front line if you want the kite fall towards you and lay on the leading edge. As normal rest position.
Lower front line if you want the kite to fall away from you and rest on its back, wing tips pointing up into the sky. Walk the line to the kite.
Right?

Why? I always fold the tip. When you put tension in the lines, the tip straightens out & dumps the sand or sand bag & the kite is sitting in the launch position ready to go.

I put a lot of pressure in my Clouds, no way I’m going to fold the tip at high pressures, too much chance of damage.

I don't know about Clouds - they're obviously a different animal. Maybe they wouldn't take kindly to being folded over if they are holding exceptionally high pressure. I'm assuming that they have very little reinforcement towards the wing tip, where most kites have dacron panels. I've been folding the kite tip for about 20 years & never had a problem. Isn't the weight on the (unfolded) tip vulnerable to tearing from objects on the ground/sand?

A cloud is very light and lays almost flat so bugger all weight is needed to hold it down. And we are talking small kites, 6 mtr and below.
