I’m going to give you some solace. Will keep a long story short. In 2017 out of the blue I was taken to the Emergency room by my wife because I had some shoulder pain. Had it for several days. Her cat sense told her something was wrong. I felt fine. I arrived and they hooked me up to an EKG and told me I was having a heart attack. I said you’re kidding-I feel fine. They put in a stint and then admitted me. Next day I was told I had to have surgery and it couldn’t wait. I was a VERY active 57 year old. Yep-CABG. Quadruple.
Fast forward. 1year later I took up foiling, I kite as hard as I did before especially in the snow.
Take your time, you’ll get off the meds and life will resume. You’ll also appreciate every day and the beauty that you may not have noticed around you before. Good luck

Thank you so much Verkiter. Congrats on a full recovery.

I have followed some of the earlier links, and I think things will get better.

I also went through that emotional stage....still do. Everything seems more beautiful, enjoyable, and awesome afterwards. Possibly it has to do with the Subconscious mind knowing that you have actually died on the table. The heart is stopped, the body cooled, the head packed in ice, and the machine takes over. Then you are re-animated with electric shock. (I had scorch marks on my back)

That was not the worst. For me it was the learner nurse who pulled out my urethral catheter as if she was starting an old outboard motor. Then after my eyes cleared she was looking at the balloon on the end, and saying, "Hmmm that's not supposed to be like that"
Now every time I go pee, it sprays out like garden sprinkler. I have the name of a specialist. He is not a urologist, he plays a sax in a band, perhaps he can show me how to hold it properly.

Ok so bring on the wind....

If you're on an actual blood thinner (warfarin, xarelto, apixaban, etc) you are likely going to be recommended NOT to kite. Post-CABG is however not an indication for long-term therapeutic anticoagulation so you are probably going to just be on aspirin and plavix or brilinta.

Your CT surgeon will likely say this regarding kiting (which is a moderate impact, moderate exertion activity, with potential for whiplash): "wait three months, wear a helmet, don't strain yourself cardiovascularly, and don't wipe out hard", but you will have to ask him/her.

Food is the best medicine. A cardiologist's solution to preventing future surgeries for his patients:

Both of my parents and in-laws have had heart surgeries. Both males were macho meat eaters. Both have adapted to a plant based whole foods diet. Don't knock something until you have tried it.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
In terms of kiting, I would wear a pfd, use the buddy systerm, or consider wearing a beacon locator for emergencies, in addition to a cell phone. I'd lean towards a bigger and/or more efficient board and smaller kite. I would try to approach kitesurfing with a relaxed zen mindset, rather than a high intensity adrenaline workout, as your heart rate would be dramatically different.

I used to be into watching the diet very strictly, followed Nathan Pritikin, “Pritikin Promise” - great book, and his son still runs a center in California, link below. They say grafts clog twice as fast as normal arteries so diet becomes more important.

Don't know but San Blas - a nice chilled place to anchor/ kite.

I would probably let my body tell me and consider that kiting will improve mental and physical fitness and heart strength healing while being careful to start with.

I am no doctor though, on the flip side I don't always listen to doctors advice if i think they are being overcautious.

Thanks again for the replies..

Basically I was on the Pritikin diet, more or less. I was very healthy, some here know me. I was underweight, avoided all the wrong fats, ate oatmeal and granola for breakfast, fruit salad for lunch. Red meat, maybe 2x a year, lots of veggies. Spearfish once a month for 4 meals of fish, otherwise chicken in soups and stir-fry. Hamburger once a year. (in San Andres at Beerstation) drank lots of water, kited a lot, exercised a lot, lean dude. Still it hit me. So the cardio guy said that I was apparently the least likely candidate, but, my body was just creating this cholesterol, or the plaque that bunged up my arteries. I was watching my cholesterol levels and even cut out milk in my tea and coffee. Every year I went to a lab for bloodwork. I even went to level 5 in a stress EKG, 10 months before the event! That Cardio gave me a clean report, saying I was as fit as a 40 year old.

The take away for you if you are in my age group, Please go and have a thorough cardio workup, this can be stopped before it poleaxes you like it did to me.

I am on Aspirin, Plavix, Crestor, Amlopres, Betaloc. All this for a guy who never took tablets. It sucks but hey I'M ALIVE!

There is a Thanks button up by their name on the top upper right side of their post.

Sounds like your genetics / body produce the cholesterol despite a great diet. I’m lucky with my low test scores - 167 recently, but still I’m told to get a calcium deposit scan, and take a statin for stroke prevention, which I’m holding off after advice from a pharmacist.

Glad to hear you got through it and are well again!
