Reviews, Experiences of GongKite Bar and Lines.

Postby jonysan » Sun Nov 15, 2020 10:14 pm

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a GONG Kite Bar and lines.
Does any one on the forum own one ? Interested in reading, opinions, experiences, and reviews.

The lines are supposedly top quality Dyneema, which seems good,... concerned about the 'Clamcleats' trim system,

Thanks.

I've never seen the Clamcleat swivel system, but it's described here:

Hi,
Thanks for the links to the swivel, and release mechanism. The quick release is also explained on the GONG website, and seems to fly past all the international safety standards.
I'm used to using the Naish BTB (below the bar) system, so the Clamcleat on the GONG (above the bar) system seems a bit 'old school'? or am I over thinking this, probably am!
The price looks good, and high quality Lines.

Hi I have a 13m Unik kite for lightwind. If you serach this forum you will find reviews.

Pretty good build quality, nothing fancy or overdone just good build & well finished.
flies very well in light winds and responds to bar input even at very low end, no stalling, efficient low end power without being a tractor.
very decent high end of the wind range for a single strut kite, quite powerful, does not flutter too much.
Excellent value for money, for a foil / strapless surf kite program.

Dont have the bar but they use good parts like the AKA QR from kite attitude, very serviceable & reliable.

Clamcleat is only the brand name for the cleat they use. It is a renowned brand coming from the sailing world. I believe they have been producing those things for decades. It is a standard ATB adjuster like in all kite bars.

Only Naish has an BTB adjuster model (I also own one) next to their ATB model, Slingshot had one, but seemed to stop it now with the new model.

For most people an ATB adjuster is easier to use.

I retrofitted an older Naish Bar with the Quickrelease from Kiteattitude (they produce the bar for Gong) and the depower lines plus the adjuster. Works well. Depower is easy to adjust, ejecting the QR is easy.
Only the swivel at the QR is not easy to turn (manually) under load. The Naish Torque Bar in comparison works so much better in this respect.

A friend of mine uses the complete bar from Kiteattitude on his Naish Pivots. I flew it once, no problems. It is a solid bar, does not look fancy but a bit rustic, does the job and you get all the spare parts.

I do prefer the profile of my Naish Torque Bar though, I think the diameter is also a bit smaller.

Thanks Dirk,

That's just what I needed to find out about the GONG bar. it sounds like it's a good value Bar, and as you said, "a bit rustic" but does the job.

I think I also would prefer the profile of the Naish bar. which is small and slightly 'angled', but will probably buy a GONG bar, as a less expensive (second) Bar.

Thanks for yours and other comments .

I have both the short and the long bar from Gong. I have owned them for a year. The lines are good and have a knot/larks head at the ends so it's easy to use with any kite. The long bar is great for big kites and makes them turn soo much faster.
The only negative is that the middle lines don't have a swevil to unwind.
I would purchase these bars again.

The swivel sits on top of the QR like with all modern QRs. It is the grey round plastic thing. Unfortunately it is hard to turn to untwist the middle lines when they are under load.

I have one. Used it once so far with Unik 9m.
Perfectly good bar given the price.
Same with the Unik.
I flew it straight after 7m Rebel on 2021 click bar
The Gong setup was less responsive on the beach than the Duotone setup. Design and size considerations given.
On the water the Gong setup was responsive and very enjoyable.
I’m happy with the bar for the Unik but I like pairing kites and bars and don’t mix.

I have the kiteattitude bar. I believe the Gong bar is just a rebranded version. The safety is intuitive and easy to use (I have used it once to land the kite). Its easy to reset. Its not the easiest swivel to spin (compared to ceramic bearings in a duotone click bar) but easier than say the duotone trust bar. Lines haven't shown abnormal deterioration or anything negative like that and are easy to change over the lifetime of the bar if you need to.

If I had a negative comment its that the donkey dick is somewhat stiffer than some brands so is tricky in the cold to attach/remove for smaller harness hooks like the Manera range (didn't notice it on my old Ion spreader bar) and the winders are only just deep enough for the lines so you need to be careful setting up not to let the lines fall off to early. Really minor grumbles as you can see and the second one is only on my 45cm bar - its not a problem on the 60cm bar as you have less lengths to gather.
