Is it hand numbness or arm?
How old are you?
Have you an history of representative motion activities? For example do you work on a computer or driving nails by hand or using a impact driver?
Arm is a much bigger deal than hand. If it is just hand there is a strong probability that it is carpal tunnel syndrome. Red pointer's idea of the wrist splint is good along with your favorite anti-inflammatory. If it persists for more than a couple days get your ass to a doctor. Nerve impingement issues are no joke.

It sounds like you could have nerve impingement in the brachial plexus. I had your symptoms to a tee including elbow pain. After multiple diagnostic tests a nerosurgeon suggested spinal fusion. It seemed an extreme solution. My damage “radiculopathy” was exacerbated by mountain biking and playing squash. Your issue as Okkiteboarder mentioned maybe due to sleeping position. I would suggest mountain biking especially downhill and looking up at your kite are contributing factors.

Try not to put so much stress on the C7 area of your neck. I quit downhill riding and squash. It changed my life. 14 years no issues.
