Pump kite with portable air compressor

Postby dev3011 » Mon Jan 04, 2021 11:51 am

Hey,

I've seen this portable air compressor and was wondering if it would be possible to pump your kite with it. If yes, why wouldn't everyone use this? The pressure should be enough, maybe it takes too much time and drains the battery too quickly?

I don't think it will do more than 1 kite. Also the presure is not accurate (1-2 psi?) Maybe this one for inflation (and end with normal pump)

Those compressors won’t have much volume. Takes forever.

Better geht a small Electric pump to fill the tube 80% and for the rest use your regular kite pump.

I do the same with my 18 sqm kite.

And below 12 sqm don’t bother with an electric pump.

high pressure, tiny volume, would take the entire session to inflate.

Definitely some interesting development when it comes to compressors, but as Toby points out getting enough volume from one of those for a kite sounds difficult. The ones I have seen are made for low volume and in some cases high pressure (for example for road bikes where you got very low volume, but high pressure - typically 70-80psi+).

After I bought a XL-pump I can't even be bothered to use compressors even if there is one available at the beach (like in Cabarete). Would probably still buy one of those electric ones if they really worked though. Especially if they are able to make one that would work for cars, road bikes etc. as well.

I had an Island inflatable pump back in the days when I was always on 17m it had a 2 stages system a turbine pump for the low pressure and a piston pump for the high pressures. It did work and it was freaking heavy so I would attach it to the kite and let it pump the kite while I was getting dressed. Some of the SUP pumps now use a similar 2 stages system and would work for a kite. Now that I foil most of the time on 9M single struts I don't bother with that it takes 30 second to pump my 9m Boxer with a regular big pump.

why wouldn't everyone use this?
Cons
-you need to protect it from sand and water
-takes forever to inflate
-noisy
-needs to be recharged
-Pumping your kite manually is a good warmup. So why not use it?
-Makes only sense with >12m sizes.

Pros
-You do not need to pump manually

Is it worth all the cons?

The new manual 2 stage/direction XL pumps work great. It takes me less than a minute to pump my 12m kite and I honestly don't mind the warm up...

Thanks everyone for the answers! I'll just stick to manual pumping then.
