I was surf foiling this weekend and hit the sandbar (about knee deep in that spot) and flew off and landed on my side and wrist.
If you fall wrong or dive etc it could be disastrous given that you are elevated off the water about two feet and moving quite fast.
Likewise, I hit the reef surf foiling, ejected and was unpleasantly surprised when my shoulder slammed into the rocks. I am used to the normal protective water cushion, but it's ineffective when falling in 1 foot of water from an extra 2 feet up. When regular surfing small waves at low tide, my rule is always to fall flat, backwards, towards the ocean, never towards shore. As the rocks are right there, it's so shallow when the waves are small. But with foiling, maybe we can get a little more complacent if we're nowhere near shore, the rocks are not visible, seems like deep water.
Anyways, I am full-on safety nerd, one of the few around here who still wear a helmet ... but a helmet will not help in this kind of direct impact wipeout. The wipeout that really freaks me out is getting ejected and end up diving in head first. If you get unlucky to be over that one single boulder in the area....that's it.
My heart goes out the Ydwer for this freak accident....wishing him all the best for recovery.
