Lost me mojo

Postby Macster » Fri Feb 19, 2021 1:02 pm

After a decade of kitesurfing and living next to one of arguably Australia's best kiting spots, something strange has happened over the last 6 months... I've lost me kite mojo.

I even bought some new kites for foiling and a new megalooping twin tip board but the excitement of new kit hasn't worked much either.

I dont know what happened, one moment I was going 3 or 4 times a week now I barely go once a fortnight. We had a kid but the wife and i are pretty good about giving each other kite passes, so I can still head out a fair amount if I want to.

Sometimes I goto the beach with all my gear and just drink beer on the shore and watch others lol.

Do you get picky with your conditions in old age? I cant be bothered with anything under 20 knots. Even foiling which was my 5-20 knot saviour is getting boring now.

I live in a part of Australia where we have been locked up for over 5 months now in total due to COVID, so maybe I'm just sick of the same beach.

Anyway, if you lost your mojo and got it back, please share.

I would say of course the "novelty" of it wears off for most (not all). Wouldn't that be true for most things?

It happened to me with golf. And I have had "ups and downs" when it comes to my interest in cycling as well. Now I enjoy cycling more than ever, but I have had periods when it has felt more like something "I have to do".

I just go with the flow. To me it is just counter-productive to force things.

Same to me after 30 years windsurfing.
Problem was not getting better any more, than staying on the same level, now decreasing level...
Never went to the beach when not perfect.
I still enjoyed the good days but they where sooooo few.

Started kiting, now again getting the stoke. Everyday is the best day I ever had, huge and fast progress. Only very little bad days - aktually can not remember of a Day „Not beeing the best“ .

You should start this wing thing ... personally I can‘t imagine that it is fun, but I lot‘s of kiters that only go winging .

Buy a woo (or similar). It gamifies the experience (biggest height/most number of rotations) which makes it easier to keep striving for progression.

Or - buy a gopro and start filming yourself. Getting good footage is really hard but it pushes the aesthetic up. I personally love that people film new tricks as it absolutely sparks my imagination. I saw a video of someone doing a boardmosis the other day and my jaw dropped. Can't wait to get out again and give it a go (though I suspect its way harder than they made it look).

i prescribe a roady to Inverloch on a decent wind day with mates. Put your hydrofoil on ebay.

It's like porn, if you do it too much it loses its impact...lol

On a serious note, maybe you were just doing it too much at one point. I have skied for over 50 years and have never lost my passion, but I only go if conditions are good and maybe 10 times per year at this point..Much more when I was younger. I have also been kiting for 10 years and get about 60 to 80 sessions per year but do sense that my rabid passion is slowing down. That being said I do see myself kiting till the end, it's a great sport, and very accessible for me.

That's the only way.

Might be something different on the water, or on land, or in the air.
