Dominican Republic For Late April - Windy?

Postby TimG » Sun Mar 14, 2021 6:37 pm

I am going to the Dominican Republic for the last week of april for a honeymoon. I couldn't convince my fiancé to go somewhere windier so we settled on the Dominican Republic since it has some wind and is a beautiful spot.

Should i expect good wind during this time? I consider good wind to be 17+ knots. I have combed through the internet and it appears that i should not expect this kind of wind during this time of year. I want to make sure i do not over hype myself for great wind when they only get 15 knots max.

Thanks for the help in advance!

You might get lucky, but based on my own experience no.

Which part of the DR? North?

Honeymoon is more south normally- if so I would say almost no chance. Not that anything is 100% when it comes to the weather.

That would be Kite beach in Cabarete?

Some years ago I did experience a great stretch of solid days in Cabarete late winter, but unless things have changed radically for the better lately it is unlikely.

I have had a lot of 12-14 knots days in Cabarete. My guess you will have some of those. But hoping you get lucky of course.

I have never been in Cabarete in April, but here are the reported statistics complied by Stefan at KiteXcite:

http://www.kitexcite.com/wind-forecast/

The Wind Statistic for Kitebeach Cabarete from the last 8 years show’s the number of days each month with winds over 10 knots, 3.5 bft:

Jan Feb March April May June July Aug Sep Okt Nov Dec
61% 72% 72% 67% 80% 96% 95% 90% 75% 64% 55% 60%
Kitebeach Cabarete Dominican Republic is a fantastic perfect side on-shore blowing consistently from the right.
January-April: 14-24 knots / May-August: 16 – 30 knots / September-December: 10-20 knots,

I have been many times to Cabarete over the years. Either in June/July or in Dec/Jan. The stats for Jan/Feb indicate around 60% probability of wind over 10 knots. That does not correspond to my experience at all. I would say more like 80% probability of wind over 10 knots. In the winter months wind is typically 13 - 15 knots on light days & 15 - 20 knots on windier days. In the summer months that changes to more like 15 - 20 on light days & 20 - 28 knots on windy days. May is kind of the transitional month, so if you're lucky you may get a bunch of windier days at the end of April. Most of the time the wind is at its strongest in the two hours before sunset ... this means you should still be able to send quality time with your lovely wife & still score a session.

While in the winter months storm driven swells can create 6' to 9' waves (or occasionally bigger) on the reef at times, waves in the summer are generally more wind driven. Can be good on a solid 25 knot day.

I understand if you are running a shop/school that you would like to present numbers that are favorable to you, but Cabarete in 11 knots isn't for most people. I have watched so many foilkiters trying to get passed the shore break in 11 knots not making it.

Not sure if Buen Hombre might have better wind? It could be worth a day trip.

Was in Cab mid april to mid may 2 years ago, essentially kited every day with 9m. (I am 90kg). I was told it was an exceptional spring. My understanding is that you can have wind holes for several days. This said i was planning to return for the same period but must wait for vaccine.

This site has good previsions and also history by period, make up your opinion.

Enjoy the maried life and hopefully get her kitting, it is a blessing. I know !

Cheers !

Can be small to nice but.....expect a very crowded break in the summer at the bay break. Not so bad if everybody is doing the circuit & line up but....alway a few freestylers plowing through to jump waves and that breaks the beat. Cant say for kite beach.
