Dyneema or Spectra Webbing for Ion 3.0

Postby watercamper » Mon Mar 29, 2021 2:37 am

Been using the original Dyneema 9/16" (14+ mm) wide webbing on the Ion C-bar Slider for about 6 months. Just starting to show wear but not from the CL (using a LF surf style CL with the metal around the TPU). It's wearing at the rub point where the webbing goes into the hole. They probably should look at that area but who am I ....

Looked at the Ion website for a replacement.. Nothing on their website. Nothing on any of the major kitesurfing websites in the US (that I could find). Sent an email to Ion. Asked about buying one or what material could I use to make one such as webbing for climbing slings. Got a lame response that I should check my local retailer or find one online. Duh! Why the hell did I contact them?

So, give me what you've found for replacing this webbing. Should I stay with the webbing or go to rope? I like the webbing. Works great. Better closure on the C-Bar than the Mystic. Try it and see. Also love my Ion B2 boardshorts. Not so sure about the Ion service!

Oh, and can I tie knots in the webbing?

Definitely upgrade to the webbing! US based Green Hat stocks them.

You could also use a Dyneema climbing sling like Mammut's Contact sling. Just cut and tie it to your specified length.

But I thought the Dyneema type materials didn't hold knots very well? I know the original webbing is sewn on one end and has a piece of metal with a screw to lock the other end.

True, but they've improved a bit over the years. Mammut's Magic Sling 12.0 would be a good choice for the added knot strength. I've yet to go this route, but those that I know are using a dual rope set-up (one as back-up).
