Noir Matter Quark Setup v. Water

Postby brighamj » Mon Apr 12, 2021 10:09 pm

This looks like an amazing GoPro camera mount for your lines, but the waterproof challenges are real. I emailed Noir Matter to ask about the resilience to water:

“I am interested in a setup for my kite lines, but I am concerned by the waterproof level. If the kite goes down, which I expect it will in a bigger session, will the Quark be damaged?”

They succinctly responded with a simple sentence:

“ Yes it will be damaged if it goes underwater.”

Hopefully, this will help other interested buyers such as myself. Cheers, fellas.

Yep. The Noir Matter Quark gimbal is a bad solution for kiters. Check out the GoPro Max with Horizon Lock feature. This newer GoPro has made the Quark stabilizer obsolete.

I got a quark a few years back when they first came out. Works amazingly well until it doesn't! Obviously, it ended up in the water a few times and after a month it completely seized up. I thought their marketing was a bit unfair as they have pro kiters and surfers using the product and showed it getting dunked in the water. But hey ho. Lesson learned.

I now have a GoPro Max and it's the easiest GoPro I've ever had for line mount filming. I use it with the Mile High line mount - I like this mount as it completely surrounds the camera and there are no bits sticking out that loose lines can catch on. I properly feel like I can put this on my lines and forget about it.

I still have my Noir Matter Quark, but i hardly use it anymore It´s heavy and is not really waterproof.

I pretty much just use the Go Pro 9 with the Max Lens mod, or the Go Pro Max. They have automatic Horizon levelling.

Below are examples of both in use as line cams with the UGo Mount.

There is also the new go2 from insta360, which has autoleveling. Its tiny and seems nice and simple. I just havent seen a linemount yet.

Nice. Kite loops look sick. Any tips on best distance to put the mount?
